UNP to take up Revival of Underperforming Enterprises and Unutilised Assets Bill matter globally

In addition to countering the proposed Revival of Underperforming Enterprises and Unutilised Assets Bill locally, the main opposition UNP has decided to take the matter to the international community as well with measures being taken to refer it to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) today.

Accordingly UNP MP Dr. Jayalath Jayawardene is to brief CPA Secretary General Dr. William F. Shija in London today.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror from London, Dr. Jayawardene said he would brief Dr. Shija on the situation that had arisen with regard to the new Bill to be presented in Parliament on Wednesday.

Dr. Jayawardene said he would explain everything on the Bill to the CPA and would also highlight the plight of the profit-making venture Sevanagala Sugar Industries Ltd belonging to Daya Gamage who is an active member of the UNP.

He said he had received detailed information on the Bill from deputy leader Karu Jayasuriya.

Meanwhile, Dr. Jayawardene had also met UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay and High Commissioner on Refugees António Guterres in Switzerland during his on-going tour in Europe. He had briefed them about the situation in Sri Lanka. He had also met Inter Parliamentary Union officials during his tour.

Dr. Jayawardene said he had briefed all these officials on the attack directed at various MPs including Dayasiri Jayasekera, Rosy Senanayake, UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake, Vijitha Herath and Former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka. He had also briefed them about the killings of Former MPs Joseph Pararajasingham, T. Maheshwaran and N. Raviraj. “The officials have condemned all the killings and attacks on MPs and had expressed their concern over them,” he said. (Yohan Perera)
