UNP to review and strengthen party

The United National Party (UNP) today said it had suffered a setback at Saturday’s Provincial Council Elections but would make use of the results to review its stand and strengthen the party.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told journalists that his party had suffered a setback but one had to accept that the ruling party had also suffered a somewhat similar fate.

Accordingly he said the ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) had lost a seat in the Kurunegala District compared to the 2009 elections. He recalled that the UPFA got 24 seats in Kurunegala in 2009 but only 23 seats in the district this time around, reducing its percentage of votes to 69 per cent compared to more than 70 per cent it had secured in 2009. He said the situation was the same with regard to the Kandy District where the government had got only 16 seats compared to 18 in 2009. In the Matale district he said the ruling party’s percentage had dropped to 59 percent from the 68 per cent in 2009. (YP)

KUTHYA ADHIKARI MANDALAYA IS FULL OF JUNK
GET RID OF THEM FIRST INSTEAD OF REMOVING THE LEADER

    ananda Monday, 23 September 2013 09:57 AM

Party need the new leadership. People are fed up with current bunch, specially the RW and Tissa. Try and get GSF and Dayasiri with few other good people to party. Then party leadership can form with Karu / Sajith / GSF / Dayasiri / Milinda / etc.
People expectation are to establish law and order and corruption free country from TOP TO BOTTOM. Simple way of winning the election for UNP. Take it Singapore as example and need the leader as same caliber.

    Aegon Monday, 23 September 2013 09:41 AM

    Expel Ranil from the party

    raja Monday, 23 September 2013 09:39 AM

the same thing happened in 80's in soviet union,a geriatric leadership was running the show and the rest was history, the same fate awaits for unp unless it regroups under a new young leadership, people are fed up with bunch of jokers without a vision and the leadership is unchanged nearly 20 years despite numerous defeats.

Kelani Kolla Monday, 23 September 2013 09:02 AM

Congrats RW , Your price is on the way !!!!!!!!!!!

    SAM_SPARROW Monday, 23 September 2013 07:50 AM

    kondebendapucheena Monday, 23 September 2013 07:31 AM

Mangala is the reason for most of the losses as he is doing a job what Mahinda asked him to do

    Roshan Monday, 23 September 2013 07:23 AM

Let the representatives of the UNP to decide, by having a free and fair election without any restrictions and road closures as before.

Country is not lawless, unp is inhuman, they know that unp will distroy the country

    fernado Monday, 23 September 2013 02:15 PM

Please understand the Ground situation. Allow parliamentarians, PC Councillors and Pradesiya Sabaha Members to vote for a UNP leader and the governing council by a secret Ballot. Be democratic. If you don't act hurriedly , sorry SF will be the Opposition leader by next election. You need a National organizer in the caliber of Dayasiri, Now choose one from Sujeewa or Buddhika. make aggressive politics. fight like JRJ and RP. please leave the leadership to Mr sajith Premadasa and karu.. make a procession from Colombo to -Kandy with the new leader.

    upul Monday, 23 September 2013 02:44 PM

    Need more than double dosage.

    weera Sunday, 22 September 2013 04:50 PM

Ranil's job as the opposition leader is fully secured. Congratulations!!!

    crick Sunday, 22 September 2013 05:04 PM

    and keep Ranil as leader.

    Kamal Sunday, 22 September 2013 05:09 PM

Ranil could be a brilliant person but I am lost why the people around him cannot understand that he lacks three important types of basic intelligence required by a leader, verbal, interpersonal and intrapersonal. They should read about the theory of multiple intelligence before they select a new leader.

    Perera Sunday, 22 September 2013 05:38 PM

Did Harin hold a bet that Dayasiri's Panduwasnuwara electorate will not give a 40,000 for PA vs 4,000 for UNP result as well? Good place to start your review!

    Bugsy. Sunday, 22 September 2013 05:50 PM

Simple logic. Public don't like UNP leadership though the government is corrupt and the country is law less. UNP will never establish power under the current leader.

    Shan Sunday, 22 September 2013 06:01 PM

Stop talking abt other parties... Get RID of your leader first to fix all these issues....

    Ratawasiya Sunday, 22 September 2013 03:56 PM

Install Karu Jayasuriya as the leader who can unite both factions.

    citizens Sunday, 22 September 2013 06:08 PM

I suggest to bring Sajith Premadasa could do better than Karu.

    Nihal B D Sunday, 22 September 2013 06:09 PM

It's not the leadership need a change but the voters thinking should be changed. They help to build political dynasties by voting for family members regardless how qualified them to be good leaders. JVP has some good members with fantastic leadership capabilities unfortunately their past is dark.

    Sonali Sunday, 22 September 2013 06:18 PM

Ahaha. Architect of false jilmart "STORY" Man-gala's face is nicely captured by DM!

    Aca Sunday, 22 September 2013 06:36 PM

Where is the so called leader, who is not a leader. Has he realised at least for the 25th time?

Muheed Jeeran Sunday, 22 September 2013 06:48 PM

To be honest you are talking without any sense how a political strategy works. I am an international and a strategist, We run many campaigns for many part of the world. You need to hire professionals to run the campaign. Get the advice from people like us on what strategy you need and how to change the table.

Your analysis doesn't make any sense at all.

    Shankar Sunday, 22 September 2013 06:50 PM

    What about North?
Maheswaran was a respected UNP politician over there few years back but it doesn't mean his brother to be the follower who cannot speak a word without the ugly words. But he was the UNP's Chief Minister Candidate and got only 800 votes in Jaffna district. Then how the UNP will strengthen?

Senaka Ranasinghe Sunday, 22 September 2013 06:51 PM

Where's the Leader? In hiding?A proper leader has to lead from front at a defeat and not appear only when things are good. looks like the reigns have to be changed, if there is to be a strong opposition.

    modaraja Sunday, 22 September 2013 07:35 PM

UNP WILL NEVER WIN A SINGLE MATCH WITH THE CURRENT CAPTAIN ,THEY DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE WORD CHANGE

    SLA Sunday, 22 September 2013 08:29 PM

Their faces are like in a funeral house.

Sonali de Silva Sunday, 22 September 2013 10:00 PM

There is nothing to review. A house divided will fall. Get your act together and you will have a chance to come back.

    Ali Sunday, 22 September 2013 10:06 PM

I am sure you guys have told RW "don't show up until few days and we will cover up the shame telling some BS to the media"
By the way, how many more elections roughly you would need to complete your review? My kid was school going when you started your review. Now about to get married. Hope you would complete it before he becomes a grandpa.....Finally found an example to say "change is not constant always - UNP"

Suq Madique Monday, 23 September 2013 01:45 AM

I don't think even viagra can revive the UNP.

    Fayad Monday, 23 September 2013 03:58 AM

    With the same leader ?

    Ukussa Monday, 23 September 2013 04:19 AM

Now or Never........The reason is quite known to the UNP voters.
