The United National Party said today it was considering fielding a separate candidate from the UNP at the forthcoming presidential elections.

UNP national leader Ranil Wickremesinghe told a group meeting this morning that Ven. Maduluwawe Sobotha Thera would not contest as the common candidate despite moves to convince him to do so.

Mr. Wickremesinghe suggested countrywide protest should be organised like the ‘Jana Bala Meheyuma’ from June this year against the Government.

He said that another no confidence motion would be presented against the Government apart from the one which was brought today.

Mr. Wickremesinghe said it would be presented because the Government was planning to shift the five casinos which were operating in the country to the proposed Hotel complex at D.R. Wijeyawardane Mavatha by breaking its earlier promise.

“Five casinos are operating in the country right now. Minister Keheliya Rambukwella has said recently that those casinos can be shifted anywhere in the country. So the Government is planning to shift them to the new Hotel complex at D.R. Wijeyawardane Mavatha. This is a breach of confidence as it had earlier claimed that no casinos will be established there,” he said.(Indika Sri Aravinda)

We simply don't understand why UNP needs a different candidate when their leader RW is eligible to contest???

Sir: How about Ms. Shirani Bandaranayake? Has UNP thought of nominating her? She could unseat President Rajapakse.
They ought to seriously consider fielding her.

What is most important is to submit a common candidate to win Presidential elections. No individual opposition parties can win Presidential elections. Ranil with UNP heading for the 30th defeat.

Take a bold decision soon then there will be no internal rift. Those who are against a candidate selected could either work for him or get lost.
