By imprisoning former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka, the government has given credence to the international allegation that the rule of law is not upheld in Sri Lanka, the UNP says.

Addressing a press conference, UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella said that the former Army Commander is now a political prisoner among 8000 such persons put behind bars without any charge being served on them.

“The European Union and the UN always pinpoint Sri Lanka for not upholding the rule of law. Political opponents are mercilessly hounded. The former Army Commander was dubbed as the world’s best by this government after he finished the war. Now, he is a traitor in jail. He has to undergo this political victimization because he fell out with the government and contested the presidency,” Mr. Kiriella said. (KB)

It is contrary to what Mr. Kiriella says. By sending the former General to the prison, Sri Lanka has shown that the rule of the law is upheld in our country irrespective of the person's title, position and the wealth. We must salute the judiciary in Sri Lanka but not criticize to get some political mileage out of sensational situation.

I think if the politicians in Sri Lanka truely love their Motherland, they should act in more responsible manner rather making thing more and more worse, giving opportunities to Western Countries who are trying discredit our motherland by sending Human Rights organisations and other sore of parties to inquire our things rather than looking into matters which much more worse than us in everyway in Afganistan and earlier in Iraq. Our Opposition parties also not acting in responsible manner specially UNP and JVP. They only want their political gains. Gen. Fonseka also should think these matters should end in discussion for sake of good name.

Everyone should talk about the release of General Sarath Fonseka. Everyone is angry and perturbed by this despotic act of the Rajapakse family.

Bluff Bluff Wednesday, 13 October 2010 10:36 AM

What a tragedy. Whatever UNP says, people do not take them seriously!

it was a flase propaganda by Mahinda S, and challenged by JJ, MS is silent about it now. What do you know ?

    mohammed Wednesday, 13 October 2010 09:25 AM

Whom you will charge for UNP's downfall. Change your trent and look for a way to win in next election at least.

    MK Wednesday, 13 October 2010 09:16 AM

The present becomes the past, the past if forgotten and they all move on. One day you will praise the government when the country is developed saying that the past should not play a role.. and vise versa. Its all part of the roller coaster ride of politics and public perception.

    Democract Wednesday, 13 October 2010 09:07 AM

I the people who support MR. God save this resplendent Isle !!!

    S.Jayawardene Wednesday, 13 October 2010 08:18 AM

I think you do not have a right to talk about/for war heroes as you have insulted them.

    Nuwanda Wednesday, 13 October 2010 08:58 AM

You & UNP were busy insulting armed forces when entire nation was right behind them during war. Not stopping at it, UNP, Mangala & JVP dragged SF in to dirty politics and made a baffled man out of a Great War hero. You all are the one who should take entire blame for the pathetic situation SF & the entire country is in today.

    Heman Wednesday, 13 October 2010 08:53 AM

Idiots talk nonses to cuver their dutry. This Govenment is the Ruthless Government In the world. They are worse in this millaniam.

    observer Wednesday, 13 October 2010 08:51 AM

have every one forgot that Dr.JJ could not make his case at the Human Rights commission, Geneva regarding SF? The commission rejected Dr.JJ 's paper and upheld that GOSL has not violated HR in respect of SF case. I think UNP has run out of effective strategies!!!!

Then who should talk about Sarath Fonseka? He (Lakshman Kiriella) could have done anything in the past, but it shouldn't disqualify him doing right things now. He has a point, which is absolutely correct without doubt. Let's be little flexible and open minded at this crucial juncture.

    DXB Wednesday, 13 October 2010 08:39 AM

The followings were the Friends of MR' whom helped MR .

    Anura Bandaranayake .........
    Mangala Samaraweera .........
    Sarath Fonseka .............

    In near future the followings will be promoted to above list;
    Weerawansa ,Mainthree Pala Sirisena ,............

    Niran Wednesday, 13 October 2010 08:38 AM

Are you guys 'brain dead'? SF was charged with offering military procurement contracts to a company owned by a family member. Also, correct me if I am wrong, but I think treason is also amongst the charges. Perhaps to the UNP members these are every day occurences...

    Gura Wednesday, 13 October 2010 08:33 AM

instead of talkin Bana just try to provide a survival structure to UNP

    Wasantha Wednesday, 13 October 2010 08:32 AM

Government always blame UNP that they bring disrepute to the Country by making false allegations against them.Recently, after the news bulletin of one of the state TV blamed RW for the lose of GSP plus again. Entire world knows that GSP plus was lost as government rejected conditions with regard to Human rights, Democracy, Labour rights and together with few other conditions put forward to safeguard the rights of the people. Do not know the relationship between RW and aforsaid positive conditions. And how do they say, fighting for the rights of people as an act of offence?. Entire propaganda to mislead the poor public ,nothing other than that.

Demaza Dezooza Wednesday, 13 October 2010 08:22 AM

How many times UNP has slammed the govnt ??

    Ryan Wednesday, 13 October 2010 08:20 AM
