The United National Party claims that that the General Elections conducted today was not free and fair and they will hold discussions and consider calling for a re-poll in certain places.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka told Daily Mirror online that there were several reports of voter intimidation, chasing away of polling agents from the opposition parties and some agents being abused which is why the polls were not free and fair.

“This has not been a fair poll. We will hold discussions soon to decide on what steps should be taken,” Attanayaka said.

He confirmed that according to reports received by the UNP, voter turn out had been low islandwide and said the public was “sick” of so many elections declared by the government. “This government has held too many elections which is why people are now fed up,” Attanayaka said.

Meanwhile a high ranking official from the Elections Department confirmed to Daily Mirror online that several incidents of opposition polling agents being chased away had been reported since voting began this morning. He said some agents had also not reported for work.

You can't TAKE the horse to water but you can FORCE the horse to the water - the new definition of 'democracy'!

    Thursday, 08 April 2010 05:29 PM

As usual! 'It's NOT fair that the people didn't vote for the UNP!' 'Come-on, it is NOT fair!' 'Cry, cry, cry ...'

    Thursday, 08 April 2010 05:45 PM

Ha .. Ha .. He .. He .. 'Cry-Baby Cry'! No one is listening. This time, even before counting, the UNP 'babies' have started 'crying.'

    Thursday, 08 April 2010 06:06 PM

Tissa, I am sorry to say that 'we' support only violent regimes and their men.

    Thursday, 08 April 2010 08:14 PM

After defeat, this is the usual announcement.

    Thursday, 08 April 2010 08:28 PM

Already accepted defeat? I wonder how Tissa did not see this defeat during the campaign - it was evident!

    Thursday, 08 April 2010 09:03 PM

Our country is in real jeopardy. Very sad - Very pathetic! The general public is drastically losing confidence in democracy.

    Thursday, 08 April 2010 09:40 PM

The UNF always has something to moan about. The people are sick and tired of this party. That's why it keeps losing election after election. Don't they have any common-sense.

    Thursday, 08 April 2010 10:51 AM

THIS ONLY ONE MAN SHOW ELECTION-MR & CO

    Thursday, 08 April 2010 10:54 AM

They must have smell the defeat even before the count and started a new round of cries. What a bunch of cry babies.

    Thursday, 08 April 2010 10:54 AM

Even if the incidents of chasing away opposition political agents and misuse of government property etc. the Elections Commissioner will vouch for the fact that the elections had been free and fair. He has to sing for his supper too. The very reason for the low turnout is people have got fed up of the system and they are aware that the UPFA will win by hook or by crook as they seem have to bought over all and sundry who matter.

    Thursday, 08 April 2010 10:57 AM

Yeah its not fair in all places that they didn't win.
Comon UNP, Grow up. Accept the defeat where you have to.

    Thursday, 08 April 2010 10:58 AM

Tissa Attanayaka all time say like this ( polls not fair ) its not new for him I think polls is going fair to him either unp GOING TO WIN THIS ELECTION .....LOL

    Thursday, 08 April 2010 11:00 AM

I agree with the statement but isn't this the case each time. There is no backbone, no strength behind any action to counter injustice and violence.

We all seem to stand by....latently accepting all this as the status quo.

    Thursday, 08 April 2010 11:03 AM

No wonder people are sick of the system. MR has ruined the faith people had placed in democracy. Marching towards a failed state...

    Thursday, 08 April 2010 11:05 AM

what is the police and the all the forces do all the time. The DIG said he wanted to provide more security by calling the forces to help the police. We should stop paying their salaries by paying taxes.

    Thursday, 08 April 2010 11:09 AM

Confession of the defeat at the hands of MR and clan but in a different language.

    Thursday, 08 April 2010 11:13 AM

it will be fair if UNP wins

    Friday, 09 April 2010 12:47 PM

People are not fed up with the UNF they are fed up as to the outcome of elections as they already knew the game. low turn out benefited the government of MR and the UNF supporters are indifferent to these results.

    Thursday, 08 April 2010 11:14 AM

It has become common now a days to declare this type of statement ...............anyway this time they have declared before counting ........ it seems they know the result now itself

    Thursday, 08 April 2010 11:14 AM

finding a reason to get away from the loss :P

    Thursday, 08 April 2010 11:14 AM

100% ill agree with u mr.attanayaka people hope gone in president election...god bless for sri lanka

    Thursday, 08 April 2010 11:17 AM

    he he...

    Thursday, 08 April 2010 11:18 AM

Re-Poll ?? Noooo Wayy.. please do not waist tax payers money

    Thursday, 08 April 2010 11:19 AM

Mr. Attanayaka, Now polling is over. Why don't you now disclose those electorates which you are going to call for repoll to public? Waiting for election results, i think. so, you can avoid the areas UNP won and call for others. This is also unfair...Anyway, i agree with your statement of election malpractices today.
