The main opposition United National Party today welcomed the suggestion made by the SAARC election monitors urging that the Elections Commissioner be vested with more powers to conduct elections in a free and fair manner.

Newly elected Central Provincial Council UNP candidates retired Judge P. B. Warawewa and former Colombo Deputy Mayor Asath Sally speaking on behalf of their party expressed these views at a media conference in Colombo.

Justice Warawewa said the election was not free and fair because of the absence of a level playing field because the opposition faced many obstacles when attempting to book major play grounds in the Central province for their rallies because they were all booked by the ruling UPFA.

“I held one propaganda rally on a few perches of land,” he said and added that it was the same when it came to some sections of the media with regard to election propaganda.
Justice Warawewa said there was an electricity blackout in Kandy during the transportation of ballot boxes to the counting centres.

He challenged the government to hold an election after repealing the 18th Amendment and reactivating the 17th Amendment to the constitution. (YP& LSP)

The country is certainly being drawn to anarchy by the obvious methods used to remain and retain control and power. Many lives will be lost for these reasons. The poor will perish while those who are able will move to other lands. via DM Android App

Black-out not only when ballot boxes are transported.
Also, when all the deals are carried out.

17th amend is not the Ointment for all ailments. Mr Warawewa shall know that it has so many ineffective provisions. which shall be modified to make it operable. the main defect is the appointments of members for the constitutional council. the PM and Leader of opposition shall appoint five persons as members of the council. the member of parliament other than the govt and leader of opposition have the right to appoint one with agreement. in 2004 JVP and TNA could have any consensus to find one. both had a tug of war. this 17th amend is a poor piece of legislation.
