A A A

The UNP charged today that two notorious deputy ministers had threatened the Mahanayakes of the four chapters not to conduct the special ‘Mahasanga Convention’ at the Sri Dalanda Maligawa Temple in Kandy.

The prelates announced yesterday that they decided to postpone the Convention due to security concerns of Buddhist monks and devotees who are expected to assemble at Mahamaluwa of Sri Dalanda Maligawa for this purpose.

Commenting on the Mahanayakes’ move, UNP MP Tissa Attanayake told reporters today that a government delegation accompanied by a Buddhist monk had called on the Mahanayakes and threatened them not to go ahead with this convention. (KB)

Quite possible. See what depths this country has fallen into. Only God can change the situation and I believe He will very soon.

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 08:55 AM

Regret to note that UNP, once a well-respected & resourceful party has now dropped to the level of minor parties who live on lies, fabrications & day-to-day trivial matters.
UNP has to regain its old glory and refocus it policies on vital national issues. Time to shed the parasites parties and stride forward boldly & majestically.

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 09:02 PM

What is happening? Even monks have lost their right of assembly!

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 05:25 AM

UNP or SLFP? At least the UNP exists. The only SLFP we hear of is the SLFP Mangala Wing. Oh yeah, we hear of Betel and Chair, but the Hand is forgotten. So where is SLFP? Aah, this is the one in which Karuna is Vice-President?

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 09:25 AM

Mahanayake's must confirm this to decide whether the UNP is lying or not, thereafter the majority will say that this is an act of "Deshapremi", while others will laugh at them.

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 09:27 AM

What Ranil said is absolutely correct. At present this is what happening in Sri Lanka.

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 09:55 AM

We have no viable political leadership in the country be it Red,Blue or Green it is now we need our Venerable Monks to guide our country and our people and to stand upto any intimidation. Start the struggle sirs and the people will follow.

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 09:58 AM

We have no Mandela we have no Gandhi each leader we have is worse than the next so Ven Monks it your turn to guide the people to demand true democracy. the country is crying out for you to respond not bow down to any threats. the people will protect if you the government cannot.

Who are the two deputy ministers? How could they threaten the Mahanayakes. It is rediculous. It is the Democracy on the books of Mahinda Rajapakshe.

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:10 AM

    God Bless Sri Lanka

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:10 AM

So the ball is in the Ven. Mahanayaka's court now. Please come out with the truth. The people needs to know the truth.

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 09:57 AM

Should not get frightened for these "Batta" threats. No one can stop this move at any cost. Go a head Maha Nayakasm no harm will occur.

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:16 AM

    Where this country is going?????

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 09:58 AM

You don't want to accept the truth that Mahanayake's were threatened ?

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:20 AM

    omg.....this is ridiculous!

    has the UNP gone insane?

ridiculous allegations continue without a doubt!...so much for freedom of expression in this country.

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:21 AM

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 10:01 AM

Did you say UNP or SLFP?

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:25 AM

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:27 AM

Wow, what else have you got UNP?? First the EC and now the priests... So anybody who agrees with the government is being threatened I suppose...

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:28 AM

So Bikkus also don't have freedom of speech in Sri Lanka. In a Buddhist country, even bikkus can not talk freely. SL is becoming Burma # 02.

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:31 AM

Your statement is an insult to the prelates.
Will anybody threaten Mahanayakes and will they be sacred of those threats. Think before you talk.

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:33 AM

haha... Just like Myanmar. Good thing it was called off, before the shooting

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 10:15 AM

UNP don't copy JVP,you are still the strongest single political party.

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:36 AM

No surprise there, is it? It has been the norm of this Gov.

Of course the president will claim ignorance once more. Too many things happening in the country without the knowledge of the President, wonder how he claims to be the leader of the country, if he has not control over anything that happens.

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:36 AM

what is this story making dramas? Everyday comes a new story to the country. I am Really tried to listen this kind of story. What happens to the Sri Lanka?

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:37 AM

Ask the Mahanayekas pls. or r u the spokesperson for them..

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:37 AM

The Forces of Sri Lanka have been politicized by this Government now they are going to politicize the main religion in this country. Next they will arrest four Mahanayakes. Be careful.!

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:38 AM

A democracy which makes or even effectively prepares for modern, scientific war must necessarily cease to be democratic. No country can be really well prepared for modern war unless it is governed by a tyrant, at the head of a highly trained and perfectly obedient bureaucracy. ALDOUS HUXLEY

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:38 AM

    shame on the ministers

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:38 AM

There is no more majority in SL.... its all Thuggery....
    Hurray a country like other.....

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:39 AM

    what a pitty

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:41 AM

Nowadays nobody can say who threatens who's !.

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 10:23 AM

    Nuwan Dayananda ,

Its not the UNP its the UPAF which has dropped down below
levels of politics which is far from accepted norms in the world , you have got your self in a mix .

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:43 AM

    Politics or Religion ?
If Politics record a Police entry,if religion forgive.

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 10:26 AM

This is not true , UNP is helpless and trying to use monks for their political advantage. Feel really sorry !!!

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:46 AM

This was obvious. So, even the Maha Sangha is being threatened by the despotic government. How else can we try to safeguard democracy from being burried. Even the Parliamentary election will be rigged and these tyrants will snatch victory by hook or crook. God bless this country.

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 10:26 AM

Postponement of the convention, is no news to the mass who know what have been taking place in this country during the last two months.

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:47 AM

Come on now.....this is going too far about "threatning"!!

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 10:32 AM

Even the JVP is claiming so. So what..................This is MR and family's country

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:56 AM

    Have very soon end.

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 10:35 AM

This is 5 star democracy of UPFP govt.
Will come some more in the future good
    bless you SL.

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:59 AM
