The United National Party (UNP) Working Committee said today it would take disciplinary action against party members if they participate in the United National Bikkhu Front organised mass rally which is also to be attended by former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka on October 18.

However a collective decision had been made in the end to issue a notice forbidding members from attending this rally. However several UNP MPs including Karu Jayasuriya, Dayasiri Jayasekera, Palitha Range Bandara and Asoka Abeysinghe had confirmed their participation in the rally. (YP& HF)

This is 'Dog in the Manger policy by the UNP'. You won't do it and you will not allow others to do it as well. Bad times are ahead for the UNP, it being blind to see the readings on the wall.

    Jamieson Saturday, 13 October 2012 02:02 AM

Doesn't the UNP feel a united opposition is required at this time when the govt is bulldozing through on every issue and there is nobody to stand up on the burning issues faced by the people, such as taxes, rising costs, divinaguma bill, etc, etc?

    Cobra Saturday, 13 October 2012 02:02 AM

Ranil going to the 'kade' for the govt!!!

Big Ears Saturday, 13 October 2012 02:10 AM

Well done Rail. You are a great patriot as you are protecting the government. You also a have gratitude and MR has saved you from being thrown out of the party on many occasion (read closing roads).

    Diluk Saturday, 13 October 2012 12:00 AM

This is against the democracy. Anybody can participate any political rally. Also RW knows he will get stoned and roar from the crowd, if he joins. via DM Android App

Junior Citizen Saturday, 13 October 2012 02:09 AM

SF supported by UNP, JVP and all other sundries lost by 1.8 Mn votes. Why should they go after him again ? SF is a corrupt spent force drop him and revive the grand old party

Far Thiker Saturday, 13 October 2012 03:31 AM

THIS IS AN EXAMPLE HOW UNP'S PRESENT POSITION FORMULATED.

    Supremo Saturday, 13 October 2012 03:45 AM

It is high time the people of Sri Lanka think of a change in the leadership of the Opposition.

Al Rasa Saturday, 13 October 2012 04:40 AM

One thing is clear, If UNP wants to survive it will be over the shoulder of SF and If SF wants to survive it will be over the shoulders of UNP. Both factions are having supporters. The
pathetic situation is NO ONE is existing in UNP who can take
the party to the winning post and SF shamelessly again vying the support of UNP. Both faction should be ashamed.

Big Ears Saturday, 13 October 2012 02:08 AM

The UNP claim to be the largest political party in Sri Lanka. May I remind the UNP leadership that claiming to be largest has to based on grass root support and popularity of the party. The UNP lacks both.

    Arunditha. Saturday, 13 October 2012 09:22 AM

Now the people of UNP should come forward and overthrow the Leader of (supporter) the defeats. if he does not listen to the people.

    Cobra Saturday, 13 October 2012 10:27 AM

JR and Premadasa must be turning in their graves!!!

    Naman Saturday, 13 October 2012 06:32 PM

It is time that RW realises that he is never meant to be the President of Sri Lanka.
Let a better Leader take over to counter act the current evil forces

    Prasannajit Sunday, 14 October 2012 02:10 AM

What a pathetic situation of the UNP.

    Minister Sunday, 14 October 2012 06:04 AM

That shows and confirms UNP is a member of the UFPA!

    Sue Sunday, 14 October 2012 03:33 PM

Of course he knows he'll never be president, but if he let go of his leadership in the opposition, he'll be nothing. That's why he's hanging on to that post with the help of MR so that he can enjoy the perks as the Leader of the Opposition for ever. The agreement I guess is to help MR and vice versa.

    kabba Sunday, 14 October 2012 05:04 PM

you should abolish during 17 unp years

Nelun Herath Tuesday, 16 October 2012 06:34 AM

UNPis acting foolishly I suppose they are scared that SF will come into power. These foolish UNP ers no future for them really unless they get together with SF. SF is the only hope
but they are so idiotic and they too are supporters of MR so this is why they dont want to join. This will be a big mistake from there part. All must join toghether otherwise very difficlult it will be why cant these fools realise this ??

Potta Sunil Saturday, 13 October 2012 12:10 AM

UNP's dog in the manger attitude (BALLA PIDURU KANNETH NA...) makes the govt continue anything and everything wihout any problem.

Jagath Leanage Friday, 12 October 2012 02:45 PM

We know that Ranil doesnt want to form a government nor to be the presidnt. He wanted give away the path to Ruwan Wijewardena. If so we have to wait long time to oust present regime and ordinary citizen has to suffer until such time? Shame R.W. . Give a chance to S.F. or Sajith. and see, if they fails then give to Ruwan. Otherwise all UNP'ers will leave the party.

    Pradeep Friday, 12 October 2012 02:46 PM

Every contry loving politician should unite in one voice to send a srong messages on common causes to the rulers. Mere party politics with every five year batton change won't help the country or it's people.

Junior Citizen Friday, 12 October 2012 03:07 PM

Stick with the party, SF will never deliver the goods. fight for changes-Long way to go

    RF Friday, 12 October 2012 03:09 PM

    Why???

    Premalal Friday, 12 October 2012 04:17 PM

RW repaying MR for protecting his post as the leader of the opposition.

    Curious Friday, 12 October 2012 04:46 PM

Does it matter who participates ? All are crooks!

    Senaka Friday, 12 October 2012 05:03 PM

MR will be delighted to hear this. He will be the ultimate winner !

Independent Observer Friday, 12 October 2012 05:51 PM

    What is the UNP against?
Is it the United National Bikkhu Front ,or the formar Army Commander General Sarath Fonseka , or DEMOCRACY ?

Big Ears Friday, 12 October 2012 02:07 PM

Get lost Ranil. We know you are happy with the perks you get as the leader of the opposition. You are not worried of the grass root level supports who are finding it hard to live with the spiraling cost of living. You are your stooges can keep off as it is a liability to have you on the platform with the General.

    Ami Saturday, 13 October 2012 12:16 AM

Im not amazed ... Tony Abbott is a carbon copy of you Ranil LOL

    ali Saturday, 13 October 2012 12:33 AM

Ranil is an absolute disgrace to this country .Quciker he disappears from the politics better it is for the country and democracy.

    silva Saturday, 13 October 2012 12:43 AM

RW is responsible for what is happening in this country today.

Yohan Perera Saturday, 13 October 2012 01:17 AM

Is this the difference between governing party and the opposition???

    MagodisThuma! Saturday, 13 October 2012 01:36 AM

Is he really a Leader ? Mr Bean is a better leader !

Independent Writer Saturday, 13 October 2012 01:48 AM

What we cant understand is what Ranli realy wanted to do? He doesnt wants to come in to power or, he wanted Ruwan Wijewardena to become leader one day? We know Ranil is not a good leader. So he must give way to S.F. or Sajith

    Ranjit Saturday, 13 October 2012 01:53 AM

    Dem O' Cracy?

    Gadzooks Saturday, 13 October 2012 01:57 AM

This ban strikes me as undemocratic, contrary to a free society where people an choose to attend or not to attend an open meeting.
