The Moratuwa University has been closed indefinitely following a clash between two student groups late last night, the police media unit said. At least three students were injured in the clash.

According to the police the clash broke out during a Vesak lantern exhibition organized by the University last night. Police say they have tightened security around the University premises and the situation is believed to be calm at the moment. (Daily Mirror online)

only place which didnt have any clashes ..now begun...

    Monday, 31 May 2010 07:07 AM

'tie-coat' eliticit clan cannot enter local universities that is why they opt to foreign universities.
The root cause of this clash is the government blind-eye on the NDT issue. There is a land to relocate NDT but no funds build it. On the other hand NDT is not really trying to move out.

The clashes in this uni during last few months were between NDT and NDT on ragging issues. This is the first Engineering - NDT clash for a reasonably long period.

Let us not insult the poor animals?

    Monday, 31 May 2010 07:40 AM

They are the cream that has gone sour!

    Monday, 31 May 2010 07:42 AM

Literacy does not require going to university. You can be considered literate if you can read. That means grade three and above.

    Monday, 31 May 2010 07:44 AM

You can't prevent this now. It is from the grass root. When children take their school flags and run behind it, there the problem starts. They are taught to work in groups at every stage.
If you can stop this school flags issue you can prevent at least the future generation

    Monday, 31 May 2010 07:44 AM

That is rather unfair. Quite a few academics and professionals and well off parents DO send their kids to the local universities. University does not mean its only for the downtrodden. Its for everyone who can get good marks. And its not fair to judge the majority of students who work hard at learning from the actions of a few.

    Monday, 31 May 2010 07:48 AM

We dont want the brilliant sons and daughters of farmers to have to pay their way through university. That is unfair and will only create an elite class and lots of dissatisfaction among youth. Let those who can pay, pay for their university. Give the others, on family income below a certain point scholarships. We want a just society as meant by the "Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka". Not a 100% capitalist nation.

    Monday, 31 May 2010 07:49 AM

Only a few idiots are left anyway. So dont worry too much. We just need to get them out of the education system. That is about the only place where they have clout now.

    Monday, 31 May 2010 07:04 AM

It is very saddening that our so called intelligent and educated youth resort to such beastly behaviour over trivial issues. Don't they have brains to realise that being beneficiaries of free university education, they have an obligation to act with restraint and a sense of responsibility?
    Shame!

    Monday, 31 May 2010 08:03 AM

as a punishment their degree has to be delayed for another one year... @ least then thy will learn a lesson

    Monday, 31 May 2010 08:22 AM

True Story. But find out just how many Sons and daughters of farmers are actually attending university. Most of those in university can afford a paid education. Therefore your idea is good. most of them got to uni on the back of private tution and even individual tution - @ the rate of over 5,000 Rs per month
I recently met a university student who is filthy rich-has his own vehicle, but still claims mahapola scholarship to pay his internet bill. Free education has been taken for granted.
Its OUR money. dont forget it.

    Monday, 31 May 2010 08:39 AM

This is a never ending plauge & menace at Universities. What a waste of public money.

    Monday, 31 May 2010 08:48 AM

In that case rotten apple is NDT in university of moratuwa. They are not undergraduate students but diploma student. They always make troubles in university of moratuwa.
Although it was proposed by a commission to relocate the NDT course somewhere else all of the governments didn't pay attention to that. Most of the undergraduates in University of Moratuwa don't need troubles. They don't even have politics in the uni

    Monday, 31 May 2010 08:50 AM

Chase NDT away from the univerisity to keep peace in Unit.

    Monday, 31 May 2010 08:55 AM

dont worry, clashes are ingrained part of university culture.

    Monday, 31 May 2010 08:58 AM

Moratuwa was the most peaceful university to the best of our knowledge. However, NDT students have created tis type of violance and interrupted the education of Engineering students. So I beleive the authorities should look at the entire history of violance and relocate the NDT students as quickly as possible and let the engineering students do their academic work in peace.

    Monday, 31 May 2010 09:27 AM

DT students once again try to hide their naked body from a clash in the university. They are the only reason for the impurity of the University of Moratuwa. Let us move towards that impurity taken off.

    Monday, 31 May 2010 05:49 AM

I strongly believe that the education reforms should be conducted where the "Free Education" system will be provided ONLY upto A/L and NOT beyond, period. University education MUST be fee based, where the individual , if required, can engage in temp employment to fund his/her education. Whatever is free is always for granted. Sadly this is a fact.

    Point to think.......

    Monday, 31 May 2010 04:55 AM

These unruly folks must be caged like animals in the zoo otherwise we will never be able to enforce obedience in universities.

    Monday, 31 May 2010 05:01 AM

Good to open private universities, when something given free of charge, our guys do not know the value of it!

    Monday, 31 May 2010 05:08 AM

Endless clashes in all Us around SL. Until the authorities take a strong response they will continue to show the true colours of highest calibre (so called) future citizens!

    Monday, 31 May 2010 05:08 AM

supposed to be "Cream Of the Students".... can imagine what sort of cream it is...

    Monday, 31 May 2010 05:17 AM

Its about time they charged these people for doing their studies. What a waste of money, OUR money, not theirs.

    Monday, 31 May 2010 05:38 AM

We have a high literacy rate? My foot! What do Sri Lankans mean by literacy? Is it only restricted to reading, writing and arithmetic? Why not give them honorary doctorates in thuggery and evict them from the universities.

    Monday, 31 May 2010 05:39 AM

This is what happens when the 'tie coat" eliticist group dont enter local universities but opt for foreign education

    Monday, 31 May 2010 05:40 AM

NDT(National DIPLOMA in Technology) should be shifted from the Engineering Faculty premises. It is no match to the engineering degree. Therefore an inferiority complex is among those who are following the diploma. They create trouble all the time. Ragging to an inhumane degree is something very common among the NDT students.

    Monday, 31 May 2010 04:44 AM

Violence in the name of the blessed Vesak! What a shame! Students should learn human values & good behaviour, in addition to academic subjects, so as to blossom into exemplary citizens.

    Monday, 31 May 2010 05:56 AM

These students are wasting our TAX money. Government! Pls take immediate action.

    Monday, 31 May 2010 05:57 AM

@Ish, It is a mere minority that makes trouble. Please don't look down on the majority undergraduates who abide by the rules and regulations.

    Monday, 31 May 2010 06:14 AM

Another case to show what these cram-before-exam intellectuals are made up of. Really these people are wasting the money of the country. The poor people of this country toil and their money is used to 'educate' these hooligans. Clearly it's time to stop these "pin-panthi" and charge a reasonable fee for education.

    Monday, 31 May 2010 06:18 AM

The very lament attitude towards punishing those who rag others is the main issue.

University administration should develop a backbone first to bring the culprits to the books.

Anyone who disrupt the university education system should be severely be dealt with.

    Monday, 31 May 2010 06:21 AM

Please JVP, let them study freely. Everybody knows that you are doing theses things. Please do not hurt MotherLand. Otherwise all youths will abandon you as people already did last 3-4 elections. Please,, Please,,

    Monday, 31 May 2010 06:28 AM

This is not a bad idea, if they were to pay even a nominal amount, I'm sure they would not behave this way. The people in this country expect everything to be free, this is the result of socialism. Even if this is a minority, could not the majority of students stop this nonsense. Some of these folks are really social misfits who get pleasure out of ragging and destruction.

    Monday, 31 May 2010 06:36 AM

One rotten apple is enough to spoil an entire crate of apples... I don't want my tax money to be wasted on such "minorities"....

    Monday, 31 May 2010 06:49 AM

This was the most peaceful uni till recently. Can't imagine the change now every month there is a conflict!
