The United National Front which met last night has decided to continue with the Elephant symbol at the General Elections and finalized the seats for its candidates except for the Batticaloa and Nuwaraeliya districts.

Former parliamentarian Mano Ganeshan, speaking to Daily Mirror online, said that the discussions with the UNF alliance members continued for several hours late last night after which the party decided on the seats for its candidates.

The nomination papers for the UNF will be signed over the next few days, Ganeshan said adding however that they were unable to reach an agreement on the Batticaloa and Nuwaraeliya districts.

The decision to go ahead under the Elephant symbol comes amidst last minute attempts by the JVP which urged the UNF to reconsider moves to contest alone and join hands with the political parties which had backed General Sarath Fonseka at the Presidential polls.

General Fonseka, it was reported today, has indicated that he will contest the General Elections under the JVP-led Democratic National Alliance (DNA) and the trophy symbol and not the UNF alliance. (Daily Mirror online)

    Better this way.

The elephant symbol is more recognized island-wide anyway.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 05:27 AM

Sorry General, try this way too. Good luck

    Monday, 22 February 2010 05:29 AM

    Sorry!! Somawansa.....

    Monday, 22 February 2010 05:33 AM

The good decision to UPFA and bad news to JVP. What did you do to SF and what would be happen to him. I think he may Rest In Pease.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 05:39 AM

Ranil you will never get votes this time put Genaral in to frist and came this is garvement wanted this time consider with JVP and came u will win

    Monday, 22 February 2010 05:44 AM

    Heading for another political disaster.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 06:06 AM

I am a UNP supporter, but im not gonna vote this time... Its a waste of time, even if UNP wins a fabricated result will be released at last... Change should come in some other way

    Monday, 22 February 2010 06:18 AM

Finally a wise decesion tp keep JVP away

    Monday, 22 February 2010 06:26 AM

This move by UNF and JVP would be a disaster for not only JVP, but Ranil. He may loose many Preferential votes due to SF.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 06:31 AM

Presidential Election results MR and Ranil won... SF and most saddly Sri Lanks lost.

Ranil won becuase he was playing to loose in a sense to keep is Opposition leadership.

They say it better to be the dog's head (Opposition leader of a few memer opposition, provided that TNA will not get more than UNF) and Lion's tail (Strong opposion with a man capabale of challenging MR).

SF as the opposition leader will be the best available option for the country!

    Monday, 22 February 2010 06:32 AM

excellent move - don't give up our elephant.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 06:37 AM

    Wise move-

    Monday, 22 February 2010 06:48 AM

Sad but I feel only the UNF can provide good governance

    Monday, 22 February 2010 06:55 AM

A good friend is need in deed. Fonseka will learn from now i hope

    Monday, 22 February 2010 05:23 AM

We will come back with more Majority than 1977......... Mahinda has become a King and general public has become Slaves & Poor .
We are the best in managing the economic !

    Monday, 22 February 2010 07:35 AM

I believe all opposition parties should have joined the UNF which is the stronger party, in order to give the government a good run and prevent 2/3 majority which will spell disaster to the country.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 09:28 AM

Im glad the elephant was never compatible with the bell. I wonder whether SF is aware of the many killings of several army officers from the south in the 1988/90 era.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 11:11 AM

JVP will be the sole beneficiary

    Monday, 22 February 2010 12:22 PM

mr fonseka got 4 millon vote all from UNP not From JVP
he must understand that poor sf

    Monday, 22 February 2010 12:40 PM

Poor Fonseka didn't know much about Ranil Wickramasinghe

    Monday, 22 February 2010 12:40 PM

A man who voted for SF during the presidential election, will think twice when he is voting this time. Wrong move by SF to contest under the JVP led alliance.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 02:35 PM

mr jr jayawardana mr r premadasa db wijetunge gamini
dissanayaka lalith atulathmudali proud of ranil dicition to contest on elephent simbol....

    Monday, 22 February 2010 02:44 PM

If UNP refuses to contest under Swan we will vote for the JVP. It is time to unite against the common enemy , No matter under which sign. Unity is most important.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 03:44 PM

    God move

    Monday, 22 February 2010 04:17 PM

Elephant is UNP. UNP is Elephant

    Monday, 22 February 2010 06:07 PM

An opposition win, at this GE, is extremly remote. At least try to prevent them getting 2/3rds. Don't just concentrate on showing the wrongdoings of the government. Excessive accusations often backfire! Try to put across a viable election manifesto, this time around. Good luck, UNP!

    Monday, 22 February 2010 08:27 PM

I will not vote UNP. I am with SF, no matter how he contests. His strength, to stand up against MR, is good enough reason.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 04:01 AM

I’m a seriously UNF person but I think UNF recently get this decision “Contest under Elephant” is not suitable.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 02:58 AM

This will only guaratee Ranil his Leader of Opposition title.
Possibly this will also be the end of political career of the great General.
    Sad state of affairs !!!

    Monday, 22 February 2010 03:03 AM

    Good move!

    Monday, 22 February 2010 03:10 AM

Its the second best thing you could do for the democracy of Sri Lanka. Never mind we hope for the best.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 03:10 AM

the srilankan people not interested. the govt will win the election the govt is a corrupt and thugs even a monks life in jeopradise.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 03:20 AM

Atleast JVP got a leader now.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 03:24 AM

Very Very good dissision by the heads of U N P.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 03:26 AM

very good, dont take mangala or his ideas.if you go alone will have a good future.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 03:31 AM

If SF had contacted JVP from America for advice he won't detach from JVP at this moment even though what would be the repercussions.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 03:32 AM

A very good & wise move to save the party , Leadership and above all mahinda chinthana!!!!! Keep it Up .............

    Monday, 22 February 2010 03:37 AM

People will not vote for elephant ! Don't worry.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 03:40 AM

    that's great!
better UNF go alone rather than joining with problematic JVP...

    Monday, 22 February 2010 03:49 AM

Great to see we are back with what we deserved! Mr. Sarath Fonseka should decide with whom the "real heroes" sit with.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 03:59 AM

Poor General..... now we can see how many seats mighty JVP can win.......

    Monday, 22 February 2010 02:51 AM

Very Good decision UNP! the party should not lose its symbol, which has been there since the 40 s!

    Monday, 22 February 2010 04:06 AM

    All the better for MR.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 04:10 AM

    poor general

    Monday, 22 February 2010 04:13 AM

Rivers end at sea,Sea covers three quarters of the globe. If opposition wants 113, should together contest under elephant.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 04:23 AM

Good luck to the elephant - SF can never win against Ranil in Colombo, if he leans heavily on the JVP

    Monday, 22 February 2010 04:27 AM

Any way its good. UNP would realize after the election hundreds of thousands of UNP votes including mine has gone to the General.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 04:35 AM

Great decision. JVP will be crushed do dust in this election. People will teach a lesson for those incapabale, non-practical talkers !!! Weldone UNP for omitting JVP.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 04:47 AM

However we should not vote for dictatorship

    Monday, 22 February 2010 04:48 AM

DNA, Unp, unf, Mano ,AwaMangala desparately trying to ervr the nation. Ha.....Ha.....Haaa.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 05:04 AM

    Great News.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 05:05 AM

Very good move. Do not destroy the foundations of a party for short term gains. If the policies and principles are right, people will eventually elect the UNP to govern this country. Party supporters should not despair if it does not happen in the immediate future.

    Monday, 22 February 2010 05:09 AM

We will continue with Sarath Fonseka

    Monday, 22 February 2010 05:09 AM

I think this is a good move... As UNP is a party which has a long years of background with ton of votes.
