Members of the United National Front (UNF) have decided to form a broad alliance with the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) led by MP Sarath Fonseka and the JVP.
The decision was reached as some parties including Democratic Peoples Front (DPF) led by Mano Ganesan had told the opposition leader that an alliance with minor parties would not be sufficient and a broad alliance should be formed.
UNP Matara District MP Mangala Samaraweera has been given the task of starting a dialogue with the JVP while UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jaysuriya has been appointed the task of conversing with Anoma Fonseka, wife of MP Sarath Fonseka.
Some of the leaders have informed Wickremesinghe that the UNP should not talk to the government while forging ahead with a joint opposition alliance. Some members of the UNP who had been present had also agreed with the other party leaders.
The members have also decided to meet once again on August 31 for another round of discussion. UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya, DPF leader Mano Ganesan, SLMC leader Rauff Hakeem, its general secretary Dr. A. N. Kumaraguruparan, UNP Chairman Jayawickrama Perera, General Secretary Tissa Attanayake and MP Mangala Samaraweera participated in today’s discussion.

Is it going to make any difference even if they manage to form one?

I hope it will act as a positive counter balance for abuse of office by the ruling family and govt.
But what I don't want to see is them opposing each and every move of the government. We have to accept that the govt too has done many good things for the country (beautifying cities, evicting squatters, attempting to ban littering, etc)

This decision should have been taken long time ago. UNP need solid leaders that can challenge any malpractice in the country and the leadership. Just having discussion will never help.

RW is playing a double game, must get rid of him for the sake of alliance, otherwise he will betray the opposition alliance like he did to SF???
