The UN has opened a World Food Programme (WFP) office Kilinochch and will be expanded to include staff from the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), UN Development Programme (UNDP), UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS), Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

“Much of the 7.5-acre office site had been destroyed following heavy aerial and ground bombardment,” WFP spokesperson Emilia Casella told journalists in Geneva, referring to the September 2008 closure because of clashes between Government forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

With four WFP staff now on the ground and more to arrive soon, the UN agency said it will be able to re-establish the monitoring of food dispatches to the targeted population in the area and support the ongoing resettlement and early-recovery process of the region.

DEAR GOVERNMENT KEEP A GOOD EYE ON THIS UN
I WANT TO ASK FOR THE PAST 30 YEARS UN WAS IN THE NORTH
DID THEY FIX A SINGLE TAP FOR THE PEOPLE TO DRINK WATER?

    Saturday, 19 June 2010 07:36 AM

Welcome back now we have some one to tell the truth .

    Saturday, 19 June 2010 07:39 AM

    Beware of them ...............

    Saturday, 19 June 2010 07:45 AM

CAN THEY BE TRUSTED AGAIN, KNOWING VERY WELL WHAT THEY WERE UP TO BEFORE?

    Saturday, 19 June 2010 07:47 AM

The first good move UN. the other NGO's also must be allowed to help the people.. (if gov doesn't have money to build houses for those people)

    Saturday, 19 June 2010 07:54 AM

Sri Lanka is doing far more than what even the Americans or British did for their rehabilitation plans :)

    Saturday, 19 June 2010 08:22 AM

UN has constantly interfered with internal politics and the sovereignty of SL. They have continuously pushed the agenda of its paymasters, namely the USA and Western Imperialist powers. Furthermore the UN has conveniently ignored the atrocities and war crimes committed by these countries, ex: US military base Guantanamo Bay, Vietnam, Hiroshima Nagasake, Iraq, Afghanistan, Bloody Sunday massacre. For this blatant hypocrisy, all UN offices should be deported from SL and given direction to: Guantanamo Bay.

Don't know how they sliped the net.

    Saturday, 19 June 2010 08:36 AM

if start spying or involve with undiplomatic activities catch them and deport.

    Saturday, 19 June 2010 08:51 AM

Although on the surface it sounds a good initiative, past experiences from some dubious NGO operations taught us lessons where now we have to be wiser and smarter. There is always a chance that same elements may be around unsuspectingly to get involved as volunteers or emploees with selfish motives. There should be some accountability so that aid does not end up where it does not deserve and that no manipulation is possible.

    Saturday, 19 June 2010 08:56 AM

Beware.....Must Keep Our Intelligence More Alert on Their Activities.

    Saturday, 19 June 2010 09:15 AM

Now, I do not understand this: if the UN is such an awful organisation and is meddling in internal affairs, why is this initiative allowed to take place?

    Saturday, 19 June 2010 09:34 AM

    well said

    Saturday, 19 June 2010 10:04 AM

They made our country bleed for the past 37 years & this time around they should be kept under the microscope of our Intelligence Unit & kicked out if caught initiating any nefarious activities.

    Saturday, 19 June 2010 10:43 AM

Win the heart of people in that region. they will chase them away.

    Saturday, 19 June 2010 11:41 AM

In other words, LTTE can spread the lies again to willing listeners.

    Saturday, 19 June 2010 12:10 PM

GOOD SERVICE T THE PEOPLE OF THE AFFECTED AREAS
