A A A

The large number of protestors led by Minister Wimal Weerawansa who have gathered outside the UN office in Colombo have erected a stage, blocking the entrance of the office preventing UN members from entering or leaving the building.

Weerawansa speaking to reporters gathered in the area said that they will not move from outside the office till such time UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon does not dissolve the Expert Panel.

The protestors have also started a fast unto death ‘sathyagraha’ outside the office. (Daily Mirror online)

    ND Tuesday, 06 July 2010 09:00 AM

No good can come off it. WW, you should know better than to resort to violence. A peaceful protest is far more effective.

    Gamaralaya Tuesday, 06 July 2010 08:56 AM

This is all the Govt using the NFF to do this protest. This will not happen without the blessing of the head of state. Let see whats the UN, US and EU are going to do about this.

Calistus Jayatilleke Tuesday, 06 July 2010 08:53 AM

Calistus Jayatilleke Tuesday, 06 July 2010 11:43 AM

Be not angry that you cannot make others as you wish them to be, since you cannot make yourself as you wish to be.

Calistus Jayatilleke Tuesday, 06 July 2010 11:42 AM

Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.

    Mushi Tuesday, 06 July 2010 11:28 AM

Our fasting month falls next month. Pls. hold on.. we too will join Weerawanse &Co..

The Judge Tuesday, 06 July 2010 08:35 AM

Can the President of Sri Lanka allow this to happen to the UN within the territories of S/L.
Who is Weerawansa to stage this protest. He must be doing it with the govt's tacit support!!!!!!!!

    Aadil Tuesday, 06 July 2010 10:58 AM

Good going! Some sort of relief for the peace loving citizen of SL if some thugs die. I hope Wimal also sits and fast to death! And they can call in our DR. of POLITICAL THUG.

    Suresh Tuesday, 06 July 2010 10:44 AM

I was passing these so called protestors in Havelock Road. There were women with infants marching along. Its so obvious that they have been promised a reward for this.

I am sure if they were asked what they were protesting for half of them would not know. They were just shouting words from a printed paper and were clueless what was happening!!

And they were lead by the man who got the most votes in WP. You can imgagine the majority of people in WP now..... and people come to WP from villages for better education , jobs etc..

    alex Tuesday, 06 July 2010 10:39 AM

Protest is the right of any person - why deny it to people protesting against the UN

    RajasH Tuesday, 06 July 2010 10:15 AM

Child buddhist monks leading the sit in. Good image for Sri Lanka Buddhism

    BUGGER Tuesday, 06 July 2010 10:11 AM

    Neil Tuesday, 06 July 2010 07:09 AM

These protests are causing more damage to Sri Lanka's image internationally. It proves the fact that there is something to hide

    david Tuesday, 06 July 2010 07:39 AM

    Shy Lanka,
These politicians can go direct talk with those UN officials.
    They have the facility.
If monks protest, if student protest we see water cannon and tear gas.
Here is nothing, means a lost government is behind the protest.
UN official too watch our TV news every day and they will understand this.

    Sam Tuesday, 06 July 2010 07:27 AM

If the government hasn't done anything wrong then why does Vimal worry about UN Expert panel or any other panel for that matter?

    Weera Tuesday, 06 July 2010 07:25 AM

Maybe we can reduce the food shortage, but still Gunda, it won't be the ordinary food we all eat, you see!!

    Mahesh Tuesday, 06 July 2010 07:21 AM

this will only tarnish Sri Lanka's reputation. The Govt should intervene and put a stop to this. Please Mr.President, do something. Your vote base is anyway guaranteed without Wimal.

    Holman Tuesday, 06 July 2010 07:20 AM

Tear gas and arrest all of them like how those 'hamuduruwos' were arrested near Fort Railway Station. Polisiya nidida?

    Kadira Tuesday, 06 July 2010 07:19 AM

This is inevitable and the UN should note that they cannot bully Sri Lanka into submission !

    malkanthi Tuesday, 06 July 2010 07:18 AM

What is WW next step if UN does not dissolve the panel??? expecting sanction!!

    ishak Tuesday, 06 July 2010 07:17 AM

"A politician needs the ability to foretell what is going to happen tomorrow, next week, next month, and next year. And to have the ability afterwards to explain why it didn't happen."

ordinary lankan Tuesday, 06 July 2010 07:10 AM

    Minnal Tuesday, 06 July 2010 06:58 AM

Sri Lankan un-employment can be reduced by employing people to stage demonstration.

    Ishak Tuesday, 06 July 2010 06:57 AM

Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it whether it exists or not, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedy.

    DEEN Tuesday, 06 July 2010 06:57 AM

SURELY WE ARE GOING TO LOSE INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT, BECAUSE OF THESE BEHAVIORS.

    Kapila Tuesday, 06 July 2010 08:13 AM

Oh please stave to death. Then we can get rid all of those who tarnish the image of our country.

    Ruwan Tuesday, 06 July 2010 08:33 AM

I can't understand why these people apply this kind of very cheap methods.

If this pannel not necessary refuse it deplomaticaly, with out showing so much scare to it.

    deyyiya Tuesday, 06 July 2010 08:30 AM

fasting is said to be very good for your body....but what is most encouraging is that these jokers have started a fast unto death....hopefully a few will errrrrr.....die?

    ShanShin Tuesday, 06 July 2010 08:12 AM

sathyagraha is for good or bad? People must be blind faith! Like Sam says, if the government has't done anything wrong, why do these people fear and getting into bizarre activities!

    MK Tuesday, 06 July 2010 08:10 AM
