On January 9, 2012, a Sri Lankan visa applicant was arrested for using deception and counterfeit documents to apply for a UK visa. The visa applicant was referred by the UK Border Agency to CID police in Colombo. The person concerned had submitted a passport containing a counterfeit Sri Lankan immigration arrival stamp. The counterfeit stamp had been obtained to conceal the duration of a visit made to the UK by the applicant in 2011. The visa application has been refused and the arrested applicant will have a 10 year ban on travel to the UK. In addition, the applicant now faces prosecution for these actions.

UK Border Agency Entry Clearance Manager, Claire Murray, said:

“UK Border Agency staff at the British High Commission are trained to detect false immigration stamps and visas. Falsifying and altering official stamps is a serious offence and the UK Border Agency is working with the CID and the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Sri Lanka to prevent attempts to illegally breach the UK border and to identify the agents who supply these stamps. The UK Border Agency will not tolerate abuse of the UK’s Immigration Rules and where we see abuse, we will take action against those who abuse it.”

The UK Border Agency uncovered this fraud because it conducts rigorous checks on passports and documents submitted as part of the visa application. (Source: British High Commission)

These idiots give ALL Lankans a bad name and make it difficult for even the genuine traveler to get a visa.

How much you're legitimate or genuine applicant they normally refuse visas for Sri Lankans. As Roseville stated Sri Lanka should be visa free country to UK. As well as UK citizens enjoyed in our country Sri Lankan should too enjoyed in their country without a a hassle. I don't think it is a serious offence since everyone trying have a better life. Most European countries live on making money issuing and refusing visas to Asia. Other than that they don't have no 'GDP" at all.

This person had a passport with a FAKE srilankan immigration stamp , under srilankan law the UK border agency had no choice but to inform the srilankan authorities , unfortunately when so many applicants provide fake documents and false information the staff become suspicious of all applications, which can sometimes result in genuine applicants being refused.

But for many Tamils getting out of this country is worth it
They have no future as they are always discrtiminated by every Govt,

UK should be on arrival visa to Sri Lankan nationals since this territory under commonwealth this wouldn't happen today. If you getting tighter visa regulations only for the specific nationality, these should be common because tend to get away with anything.

UKBA is the most unprofessional unit in the world.Even one of my friend's visa has been refused by giving wrong reasons.Non of the reasons is not acceptable since all his documents are true.Samething happened to my brother as well. But one of my friend got visa producing some wrong information. That is how they are working. But anyway my brother got visa to Australia and came back as he mentioned.

    Fair N Square Saturday, 28 January 2012 02:22 AM

The UK border agency's agents in cmb may be professional BUT they were NOT fool proof all these years... IF they were, not many illegals would be living there... NOT just SL's but other nationals too. They catch one and blow it out of proportion just to deter others from trying...

Further I wonder why our people still wanna go there, when all of Europe and America is in an economic mess... The other side is NOT green no more... The effort ya'll put when u go overseas- IF u put in SL u live a much more decent and productive life with RESPECT....

Exactky. Specially young students who can be better educated ib Sri Lanka, Bangla Desh, etc.

Also, how did Col. Karuna, the dancing star get through?

    Analysis Friday, 27 January 2012 09:56 PM

It's a good move to detect and take action on fraud though UK embassy should not unnecessarily delay issuing visa to third world wountry applicants. That is discrimination.

    BADA-UDA GEMMBA Friday, 27 January 2012 09:19 PM

    Do you men a "RICE-FLY"????

    Bob Friday, 27 January 2012 11:19 AM

Im not sure about this. Most UK visas are processed by indians in Chennai. There arent many white officers. As a manytime user of the system I would say, white brits handle applications more professionally, but when it comes to indians and others, they look every application with suspicion. Many cultural factors will be embedded into this as well. The bottom line is white brits do there job with just the checklist they been given, but others checklist + cultural factors, though there are many good indian and other race officers out there im sure.

    nimal Friday, 27 January 2012 11:05 AM

UK Boarder agency is the most unprofessional organization we have come accross. The indian embassy is more efficent since we know the average no of dates you can obtain a visa. Even When you hand over the genuine documents to Uk boarder agency they will tell you some story to delay the process. I am wondering why should our pepole travel to a country like UK where they treat us like dirt from th time you hand over your visa application.

    Food for thought

    gajan99 Friday, 27 January 2012 10:29 AM

    They caught a halmassa.

Gaja Banda Friday, 27 January 2012 10:16 AM

    Congratulations UK Border Agency!

You've managed to catch one out of the many hundreds that slip through the net...

    RF Friday, 27 January 2012 09:51 AM

They may be trained but UK is amoungst highest number of illegal immigrants in the world.

Shelton Fernando Friday, 27 January 2012 09:06 AM

Should be jailed too for forgery. By the way Karuna also got clearence using "tactics diplomatically" though! But his case did not go to CID!!
