India attaches "highest and most important priority" to the resettlement and rehabilitation of Tamil community in Sri Lanka and remains engaged with Colombo for achieving a 'future' for them, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said. Conveying this to DMK chief M Karunanidhi who wrote to him on August 20 on the Sri Lankan Tamil issue, Singh said the focus of New Delhi has been on the welfare and well-being of the Tamil citizens of Sri Lanka since the end of the conflict there.

"Their resettlement and rehabilitation have been of the highest and most important priority for our government", Singh said in his recent letter released to the media on Tuesday.

India has also conveyed to the Sri Lankan government the need for taking forward the dialogue with the political representatives of the Sri Lankan Tamils on devolution of power, the Prime Minister told Karunanaidhi, whose party is a key ally of the UPA.

"In this context, we remain engaged with the Government of Sri Lanka for the achievement of a future for the Tamil community in Sri Lanka that is marked by equality, dignity, justice and self-respect", Singh said.

In his letter, Karunanidhi had demanded that India should bring a resolution in the United Nations General Assembly and the United Nations Human Rights Council for bestowing rights to Sri Lankan Tamils to decide a political solution by themselves, contending that the government there has failed on this account, among other issues. Amila the is very true. I have seen this personally when I land on early morning flts in Chennai & the smell on road our of airport is unbearable. Its not in the beaches but either side of the road. This shows politician are not concerned about the people but just making comments to please the vote base. Also many refugee camps of srilankans in TN. Th4 iam baffled by the indian PM’s comments. The people of TN are so gullible that they fall prey to the same politicians like jaya & karu who take turns in fooling the people. This is the reason that srilankan refuges are returning back to SL in numbers which is ample proof that life is better here than India.

Mr Singh - The conflict may be over but there has to be rehabilitation and resettlement of terrorists, tamils and sinhalaese, muslims etc as well. Sri Lanka is one country and Jaffna is not for tamils only. So you should realise there are lots of other ethnic minorities who need to be resettled. I hope the UN will now understand the tamil terrorists are gone but resettlement should take time. I hope Mr Singh knows there are no magical wands that work on these issues.

His top priority should be to provide some basic facilities to the people of Tamil Nadu and take care of Tamil refugees who opted to take shelter in the bosom of Mother India rather than worry about the Tamils in Sri Lanka who are on par with the other communities. He should also know that there are more Tamils living in other parts of Sri Lanka than in Jaffna.
