Political parties in Tamil Nadu on Friday hailed the defeat of Mahinda Rajapaksa in the presidential elections in Sri Lanka.

Tamil Maanila Congress leader B.S. Gnanadesikan said, it was always a known fact that if the Tamils in the island nation stood united against Mr. Rajapaksa, he had little chance of winning.

Having won with the support of the Tamil votes, Maitripala Sirisena, the President-elect, should uphold the rights of the minority population, Mr. Gnanadesikan said.

The Congress too welcomed the verdict. Party spokesperson A. Gopanna said devolution of powers to the Tamil minority should be the top priority of the new government. (The Hindu)

Some comments here are unbelievable. Anyone can comment even the Tamil Nadu. What is most important is that we Sri Lankans stood united to make a change. We need to remember that united we stand divided we fall. Let Sri Lanka show the world that we can co exist no matter what. via DM Android App

We have to appreciate that Rajapakse is a true democrat whatever said and done he did not within the law and constitution. He had absolute power but he never manipulated the elections to stay in power. He declared and peaceful transition of power to the newly elected President was allowed. That way he set an example and proved that Sri Lanka is a mature democracy though it may not be in the mould of Britain or US. Now it is the duty of the new President to set up a Constitution framing Assembly to frame a Constitution to give devolution to the Tamil area while maintaining the unitary state of the country as Sri Lanka is too small to have full federalism may be have a set up like India where states have their specialty but keeping the country India as a unitary state.

As a Tamil, and as an Indian first, I am very happy to see that a new government is in place with the overwhelming support of Tamil population in Sri Lanka. Hope this means a fair treatment of Tamils as equal citizens of Sri Lanka. We would love to see a prosperous and peaceful Sri Lanka where our Sinhala and Tamil brethren welcome us as guests and tourists.
