President Mahinda Rajapaksa said today, that the real war criminals are the countries that contribute to global warming.“All plants and animal species could be wiped out by global warming. Therefore, the real war criminals and human rights violators are such countries, which contribute to the rise in global warming" he said.

"The western nations have become the greatest violators of these rules,” the President said addressing an event to observe Earth Hour today in Kandy, the President’s office said.

According to statistics, United States is the number one among large nations contributing to global warming and puilluting the environment having refused to sign the Kyoto protocol. The USA contributes 25% of emissions that are harmful to the enviorenment, the President said.

SL boasts of a 'green' environment, but every day one sees/smells belching buses, polluted & filthy canals devoid of life, rivers polluted by industrial waste emptied into, virgin forests being felled and natural habitats being ruined for commercial (illegal?) activities. For the size of the island, we are proportionately in danger of losing our very heritage.

Your excellency, US is no longer No 1 in total emissions. China surpassed the US in 2006 (2nd US, 3rd EU ). In terms of emission per person 1st Saudi Arabia, 2nd US, 3rd Australia.

USA and Western countries are the ones more concerened about Global Warming, what do we do about it? Have we found a way to re cycle waste, or have we even done away with polythene and plastic??? What about the colour of the Beira lake which flows right beside the house of the so called king??? Before blaming others we need to do our part. Are we?????
