Two Thai women travelling on a flight to Colombo from Doha were taken into police custody for the possession of 17 bags of cocaine which were found inside the iron bars of their baggage, Police Spokesman SP Ajith Rohana said.
The cocaine was detected on Tuesday when one of the two women (28) fainted while on the plane just before landing in Colombo and was rushed to Negombo hospital where x-rays revealed illicit drugs in her body.
The cocaine was found deposited inside small iron bars attached to the baggage. SP Rohana said the cocaine had not yet been weighed but that each packet of cocaine was estimated to weigh about 10 grams. The detection had been made by the Narcotics Bureau.
A 28 year old woman was under police supervision at the hospital while the other woman (22) who had attempted to travel to Bangkok via Colombo was kept in police custody. The incident was being further investigated, SP Rohana said. (Olindhi Jayasundere)
