Police were forced to use teargas to disperse opposition protests staged in Galle, Matara and Ampara this afternoon. The protesters have not informed the police about the demonstration against the arrest of General Sarath Fonseka, police media spokesman SP Preshantha Jayakody told Daily Mirror online.

"Police used teargas as the protesters who had pelted stones towards the police"

IS THIS WHAT U CALL A PEACEFUL PROTEST?

    Wednesday, 10 February 2010 02:20 PM

All this because the Presidential Election, was without a doubt a fraud. Nowhere ever has a victor hounded his fellow contestant and his close supporters after winning by a landslide. MR and his clique know that the MAJORITY are AGAINST him. What the govt. is doing now is injecting fear into the minds of those who know the truth or even half the truth. So that, their lips are sealed for ever. If MR really has the 60% on his side should he worry and chase after his opponents this much? And what is the $310 million arms from Russia for?

    Wednesday, 10 February 2010 02:24 PM

Because they censor all what good people have to say.

If voting is people's right so does peaceful protests when things go wrong. If the rulers want to uphold the law they first must obey it themselves.

God will give courage to our beloved General to show these Rajapakse Cowards what a true warrior means!

    Wednesday, 10 February 2010 12:34 PM

Why should they inform the Police. Are they saints like Mahinda. We treat the Police as puppets of Mahinda and we dont care for them. If Mahinda is doing wrong acts, why not we citizens of SriLanka do it.

    Wednesday, 10 February 2010 12:41 PM

Release him before it gets worse !

    Wednesday, 10 February 2010 12:17 PM

See how insecure they are that even a peaceful demonstration is tear gassed. This will not deter the people to continue until our President General Sarath Fonseka is released immediately.

    Wednesday, 10 February 2010 12:52 PM

Why not use tear gas on the whole country? maybe they can fill cylinders with them.

    Wednesday, 10 February 2010 12:57 PM
