The family of slain LTTE Political Wing Chief S.P. Thamilchelvam has sought clearance from the military to seek asylum in India, Deputy Minister of Resettlement Vinayagamoorthi Muralitharan told Daily Mirror online.

Tamilchelvam’s family who are currently under military custody were captured by the army while being in an IDP camp soon after the defeat of the LTTE last year.

According to Minister Muralitharan, they are now being looked after ‘well’ by the army.

“There is nothing to complain about. The army is looking after them very well. They have sought permission to go to India but their request is still under consideration,” Minister Muralitharan said.

Soon after Tamilchelvam’s family were located in an IDP camp late last year, Minister Muralitharan had told reporters that the wife and the two children of the slain LTTE Political Wing Chief would soon be allowed to join with their relations.

The Minister who had met Tamilchelvam’s family at Menik Farm, gave the promise that they would be with their relatives soon.

“Thamilchelvan’s family members are not LTTE cadres. They are civilians. That is why the Army is looking after them well. I will take their issue to the government. They can re-unite with their relations as soon as the government grants permission,” he had said.

Meanwhile more than 1500 LTTE cadres who had been sent to rehabilitation centers soon after the defeat of the Tigers last year have resettled wit their relatives in the north, Minister Muralitharan said.

However many more cadres are still under army custody for security reasons, he added. (Daily Mirror online)

Why permit them to go anywhere? This family need to remain in Sri Lanka and contribute to the society as anyone else as the head of this family has caused enough suffering to the fabric of Sri Lanka.

Whether they are ltte or not that is what they are required to do..

No Way . Can not imagine how one could engage in organized terrorism without at least the Spouse's knowledge. There seems to be an ulterior motive to go to India.

If Karuna can be treated right royally, why not TC's parents?

OH..VERY EMOTIONAL..Family of a leader of a group which is responsible for lives of hundreds of thousands of innocent men, women & children is seeking for asylum. STOP joking, you would have enjoyed all luxurious lives while massacre of innocents in the past 30years...GOSL please be aware puppets of LTTE all around the world are trying to animate it again

    Tuesday, 11 May 2010 10:31 AM

in 1983, Tamils were massacred. and their homes were looted. I am sure those people who did it are still alive and well. Why not bring them to justice if you are going witch hunting, do it properly and fairly.

The govts. both Indian & Sri Lankan should see that they won't go to the west & talk something else later. I wonder then why the Indian stationed refugees are in a hurry to come to their home stead?

    Tuesday, 11 May 2010 08:42 PM

Just an 'eyewash' to the world, to show that Sri Lankans are 'humane.'

    Tuesday, 11 May 2010 06:55 AM

I quite agree with Malkanthi's comments. The spouse of TC and the family should be rehabilitated before leaving our shores.

it makes me laugh too, when thousands of tamils were persecuted by the sinhalese and creating LTTE are praised.

    Tuesday, 11 May 2010 07:26 AM

She is a hard core active LTTE, but this treatment due to the very close relationship with Karuna....

    Tuesday, 11 May 2010 07:39 AM

1000s Tamils ? Why did you have to mention the race when 1000s of Tamils, Muslims & Sinhalese killed by LTTE ?

    Tuesday, 11 May 2010 08:43 AM

Hope at least now the Sri Lankan government understands why the Indian consulate was established in Jaffna. Its the Indian model of the Trojan Horse!

    Tuesday, 11 May 2010 08:52 AM

If you think Tamils as your brothers & sisters.. why don't you allow them to live in their own house next to you..?

    Tuesday, 11 May 2010 02:32 AM

Sri Lankans are very kind in the world, we have good attitude to behave well, Thamilchelwan family members are not LTTE, but some indian politicians willing to play with them for their purpose , so the Government of sri lanka should take necessary action to prevent these activities

    Tuesday, 11 May 2010 03:02 AM

Makes me laugh. The family of man who is responsible for thousands of deaths of innocent people wants asylum? What about the innocent people who were ruthlessly killed by this terrorist?

    Tuesday, 11 May 2010 03:24 AM

GOSL immediately should allow them to go to India where they belong. They speak the same language and their culture is preserved with their kith and kin. If someone wants to identify them as Tamil and do not want to speak for the Sri Lanka and call Sinhalese as their brothers and sisters and also call them Sri Lankan rather than calling them minority - they should go! Sri Lanka should be one country one people irrespective of their so-called ethnicity! That's it.

    Tuesday, 11 May 2010 09:06 AM

That is how they all live in Colombo. It is the Sinhalese and the Muslims that were murdered and chased away by the LTTE in the North and East (which is called ethnic cleansing)

    Tuesday, 11 May 2010 03:26 AM

Dear GSOL, why wait, let them leave our land if they wish to do so. We can live peacefully without them.

    Tuesday, 11 May 2010 09:11 AM

why don't the jaffna tamils allow sinhalese to live in the North. why are the jaffna tamils greedy for a tamil only mono ethnic land from which muslims and sinhalese will be ethnically cleansed? are the jaffna tamils racist?
