I think the police are doing the right thing. Since Wellawatha has a number of foreigners, government may want to know who are they

This is absolute discrimination and violating the rights of Tamils living in Wellawatte. Treat everyone as Srilankans irrespective of their community and don't start infusing communal feelings when we are recovering from a conflict situation. The statement issued is totally contradictory. These guys will never allow the different communities to live in peace.

I tamilan, feel there is no discrimination in this, in a metro city police need to have a database of the residents to ensure law & order. We need not make these small things a issue, and see in every thing a ethinic issue.

What happened to so many registrations done in the past? Where are the records? How many times do the people in Wellawatta have to register with the Police. Make a law for those who come to reside newly in the so called Tamil populated areas to register with the police and the Police should check once in 6 months of 1 years whether these people are living in the same residence.

This policemens statement itself is humbug. While he states that Wellawatte has a Majority of tamils, the registration takes place only in Wellawatte itself is a contradiction of his theory that "no discrimation takes place against the tamils". The pathetic and shameful issue the GOSL is behind these dastardly actions perpetrated amongst the innocent tamil population simply to gain popularity amongst the southern sinhalese.
roshan raz Friday, 23 July 2010 05:07 AM
why dont they register muslims and sinhalese too in this area. this kind of registration is not carried out in muslim or sinhalese areas. so this is clear proof of discrimination. when you are treating a particular community in a different way, its called discrimination... this is where it all starts.
roshan raz Friday, 23 July 2010 05:12 AM
what about mount lavinia, galle , hikkaduwa ... etc you will see lot of foreigners in those areas Mr.TC. ..why dont they register them too. is it the colour or the community?? they can register foreigners at the airport ...

Most of us living in Sri Lanka are discriminated except for a few is high office.

Any government is good only to the extent of its moral ability to be accountable. Non accountabilty is a clear sign of failed governance and irresponsibility to citizens.
Any crime against humanity is an international crime, much worse than the international crimes of child trafikking, money laundering and smuggling of blood diamonds, for which, accountability is seriously demanded.
The UN is morally obligated and duty bound, by its charter, to call for accountability of criminal states to ensure safety and protection of mankind.
