The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is looking into the suspicious funding of certain elements in society by NGO’s and INGO’s which may destabilize the democracy of the country, Ministry sources said.

“The Foreign Ministry is looking into all aspects of information received that certain elements in society have got illegal funding from INGOs and NGOs, with a view to destabilizing democracy and the democratically elected Government in Sri Lanka,” an official with top level clearance told Daily Mirror today.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Rohitha Bogollagama while meeting with high level diplomats informed them of these developments, according to sources. “This is a serious development that the Government of Sri Lanka is very much concerned about.  All possible measures will be initiated in this regard to trace such transactions, and those individuals and groups involved. Legal action will be taken against those individuals who are found to be involved directly or indirectly in such transactions,” the Minister had told a gathering of diplomats today.

    Friday, 19 February 2010 04:36 PM

Another way to check who had not funded them.

    Friday, 19 February 2010 04:38 PM

Every Minister of this government is a master of all trades.
No Minister has a clear job specification and they are confused with their glorified titles and benefits.

    Friday, 19 February 2010 05:08 PM

Mr./Mrs. christine, exactly. Democracy has been gang raped by these bogus NGOs, INGOs who have helped the LTTE terrorists for years.

    Friday, 19 February 2010 05:10 PM

You made a Kingdom...Now expect Democracy ...Hilarious ?.

    Friday, 19 February 2010 05:11 PM

This country is a joke. Investigate!!!.....Investigate!!!! what?
There is a lot of things to investigate to improve the day to day life of the people. International community is very suspicious.............Youe own people running the government should be investigated.

    Friday, 19 February 2010 05:29 PM

what about the probes of murders of lasantha, mahesaran,
raviraj and fraud of 4 billion of Inland revenue ? ? ? ?

    Friday, 19 February 2010 05:50 PM

Take a good look at the work they have done or ask all of them to leave so we can have a good look at what you can do
    without the NGO's.

    Friday, 19 February 2010 05:50 PM

Govt needs some issues to their survival. Earlier LTTE was there as topic, now NGOs. Poor SLns, they trust what they shouldn't.

    Friday, 19 February 2010 05:57 PM

oh boy they are going to isolate this country like North Korea

    Friday, 19 February 2010 07:01 PM

    Do they, want the money?

    Friday, 19 February 2010 07:15 PM

    30% NOT enough?

    Friday, 19 February 2010 07:54 PM

It is an accepted fact that the so-called "NGO community operation" is none other than a business.

    Friday, 19 February 2010 08:37 PM

What about the funds received as Tsunami aid, from INGOs? Will 'legal action' be taken for mishandling these, as well?

    Friday, 19 February 2010 09:32 PM

Why is the government looking at NGOs, who are helping the poor people of this country?

    Friday, 19 February 2010 09:43 PM

What about state funds and resources used by certain persons and organisations to both destabilize and pervert democracy? How about an investigation into this too ... a truly impartial one?

    Friday, 19 February 2010 10:31 PM

Isn't it deeply ironic that the most corrupt sector (government) is looking into another's alleged 'corruption'? I think it's important for people to realize that the social service sector, consisting of both INGOs and local NGOs, have done some really vital work, for the people of Sri Lanka, over many decades. Take a trip into rural regions and you'll see far more work done by these organisations, than the government, in relief, education, empowerment and poverty alleviation. Could it not be that a part of this animosity, towards this sector, is because of its pressurizing the government for good governance, maintaining freedom of expression and valuing human rights?

    Saturday, 20 February 2010 01:22 AM

Some NGO's certainly have hidden agendas

    Saturday, 20 February 2010 01:45 AM

IS THERE IS DEMOCRACY IN SRI LANKA NOW?

    Saturday, 20 February 2010 01:56 AM

What about an investigation into the gold and money discovered from LTTE safe-houses also...?
