The Student Union of the University of Ruhuna today demanded that the government and university officials create an atmosphere where students can carry on their educational activities inside the Ruhuna University without hindrance from the police.

In a press release the student union claimed, that several police officers in civil clothes had “abducted” student union president Ubaya Wickramanayake yesterday.

The union claimed that the officials were suppressing the student who were standing up for student rights rather than taking the real culprits who were responsible for the death of university student Susantha Bandara earlier this year into custody.

They claimed that if such hindrances continued, all faculties of the university would stand up together and will be forced to take action to protect student rights.  (Daily Mirror online)
