Susantha Aruna Bandara, a third year student of the Ruhunu University had passed away last night as a result of the injuries he suffered following an assault by the police at the University premises last June, the Inter University Students Federation said.

According to IUSF Convener Udul Premaratne, the deceased student had suffered severe injuries after being assaulted by the police on June 18 while he was at the university hostel. “The students had gone to the hostel to collect their belongings under the permission of the university administration since the university was closed following a students protest on June 18,” he said.

“He had been unconscious for one and a half days. After being hospitalized at the Diyathalawa hospital for four days he was transferred to the Badulla hospital,” Mr. Premaratne said.

Subsequently the student had passed away last night after nearly one month of hospitalization for injuries to the head.

Meanwhile when contacted, police spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody stated that a complaint had been lodged by the mother of the victim that he had been assaulted by a second year student at the university .

Today we have the UN avoiding recruiting UN peacekeeping forces from Sri Lanka because of this kind of indiscipline. If this is happening to the sinhalese themselves, the indiscrimation towards the tamils is unimagineable. The question that we all need to ask ourselves (including President MR) is whether we are actually a civilised community.

    Asanka Friday, 23 July 2010 08:56 AM

Eliminate JVP from Sri Lanka and we'll not see problem like this.

James bond Friday, 23 July 2010 08:37 AM

and for you let the students learn politics and make something out of this land. We have enough idiots ruining the country from the top of the political arena.

    Charlie Friday, 23 July 2010 05:32 AM

JVP is the major agitator of the students' violence. Easy for them to brain wash young students.

This is a country where education is given FREE OF CHARGE by the government.
It is entitled from Grade-1 to University Degree.
If students in school do not protest, why cant they maintain the same discipline at the university level.
The reason is they get horns as soon as they get into the University.
Sorry,I have NO REGRETS to these so called student rioters who waste tax payers money.

OL Banda Friday, 23 July 2010 05:25 AM

Many of us are not lucky enough to be Uni graduates but when we hear and see the behaviours of Uni students, feel no regret.

Need of the hour is to have the Independent Police Commision to control and admiminister the Police service. Police service will never get corrected as long as it is under the political command.

Lional De Alwis Friday, 23 July 2010 05:21 AM

    Very sad news.

    Rajitha Friday, 23 July 2010 05:08 AM

    shame!
i have personally observed during my uni days that the police (who generally are utterly uneducated) have a hatred towards university students.

    Nihal Friday, 23 July 2010 04:22 AM

The IUSF has been instrumental in destroying innocent students lives for too many a year. They are a cancer in the lives of those who would seek to study and improve themselves, The typical unthinking, brain dead "dog-in-the-manger" attitude of these political cats-paws are a menace and a curse to young people who want to be valuable citizens of this country. We hope Minister SB will succeed in puting an end to this utter rubbish soon.

    nanda Friday, 23 July 2010 05:01 AM

Police responisble for 50%, Udul premarathna and IUSF responsible for other 50%.
Please stop using students for their (Government ministers, UNP Mps and JVP idiots) own agenda.

To be fair enough, its ugly to blame the Police at once since students are divided into factions and when they fight each other, there may be injuries. Remember how computers were dashed on a students head once at SJU

    Pushpaka Friday, 23 July 2010 04:59 AM

Useless JVP. Now they will carry the coffin for a revolution. The more the deaths the more the merrier for them. Poor soul.

    kitis Friday, 23 July 2010 04:51 AM

Those students does not know the meaning of been university student.

    Sammy Friday, 23 July 2010 04:51 AM

Another case of police brutality, in recent times.

jil mart Friday, 23 July 2010 04:50 AM

Our IGP is a man without a backbone. This the seventh death under the hands of POLICE.

    scrap_metal Friday, 23 July 2010 04:47 AM

@ times we wonder.. Is the police above the LAW?

    DHA Friday, 23 July 2010 04:45 AM

very sad...but yet sounds very fishy.....!!!....Please investigate this a bit more...hope he was not murdered to create a havoc....!!!!

    krish Friday, 23 July 2010 04:30 AM

is this the way to treat a student? :( A real black mark

    TC Friday, 23 July 2010 04:27 AM

If IUSF is telling the truth, relevent police personnel should be severly punished.

Defense minsiter should take responsibility for such continuing behavior of forces and resign.

    (cant believe IUSF also)

    Sinful Friday, 23 July 2010 04:25 AM

In this a Buddhist country! Shame!
