Strong winds and rains are expected in the North, North Central and North Western Province due to thunder storms developing in the Bay of Bengal, the Department of Meteorology stated.
The cyclonic storm ‘THANE’ over the Bay of Bengal was centred about 350km Northeast of Jaffna at 8.30am today (29th). This system is moving in a westward direction from its centre (towards the Indian east coast).
Shallow and deep sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Trincomalee via Jaffna will be very rough with very strong winds and intermittent rain. The fishing and naval community is further advised to refrain from maritime activities in these seas.
There is a threat of a mild storm surge along the Northern and North-western coasts of Sri Lanka.
Intermittent showers accompanied by strong winds may prevail at times in the Jaffna Peninsula and occasional showers with fairly strong winds, at times in the rest of the Northern province, North-western, Eastern and North-central provinces.
As the situation is being continuously monitored, the public is further advised to be vigilant. (Source: Department of Meteorology)
