The 19th Amendment presented in Parliament by the Government was a result of a ‘Constitutional Coup’ to allow a person who is unable to win at an election to retain power, the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) said today.

JHU General Secretary and Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said the objective of the latest reforms was to render the Executive President powerless and to make the Prime Minister powerful.

“The people elected President Maithripala Sirisena with a mandate to curb the arbitrary powers of the Presidency and not to make the Prime Minister the Head of the Government nor allow Parliament to override the Executive. The Prime Minister can be made the Head of the Government only if approved at a referendum,” he told a news conference held at the Party Head Office in Battaramulla.

Claiming that the constitutional reforms included in the 19th Amendment were done in a hurry, he vowed to garner the support of other political parties and defeat the 19th Amendment in its present form. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

It is not healthy at all to change the constitution in such a rush. Ranil should consult with all parties and general public first.

Champaka- If the JHU contests today - you will not even get a seat. In the past JHU pushed sinhala/ buddhist supremacy and capitalised on the war. When Champaka was a minister under MR- accepted all the corruption in the power ministry but took non action- nor had the guts to resign from the Govt. He was removed from the Power ministry and given a different Ministry, which he willingly took to be in power. He only changed and started being a crusader against corruption when CBK, Maithree, Ranil agreement was formed. Without Ranil and UNP sacrifice, Maithree would not have won.Champaka now taking a lot- why not resign and contest to see if you get re elected

We knew this was the case. This is an election promise.... Whether RW gets more power or not is immaterial. What matters is there will a PM and a cabinet who is answerable to the Parliament... nothing to realize now.
