Sri Lanka ranked 29 in the list of the most failed states ", the prestigious Foreign Policy magazine said in its latest annual ranking.

Sri Lanka ranked high in the Factionalized Elite criteria scoring 9.5 while Group Grievances scored 9.4.

Sri Lanka’s neighboring countries such as Pakistan is at number 12, Myanmar is at 18, Bangladesh (25); Nepal (27), and Bhutan is at 50 in a list of 60 countries in which African countries dominate.

On Sri Lanka, it said, "The government's final push against the rebels relied on the shelling of civilians and other atrocities, according to a 2010 report by the International Crisis Group.

"The most recent statistics from last year indicate that some 327,000 are still displaced from the conflict."

"Despite the pronounced fractures still lingering, the Sinhalese-dominated government in Colombo seems eager to forget the past," it added.

Other countries in the top 10 are Chad, Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan Central African Republic and Iraq. (Sources: The Economic Times)

If SL got a good rating then who is behind?

    Anthony Tuesday, 21 June 2011 04:29 PM

Actually...the lower ranking means that the country improved....29th means that SL got better. But still....It's a tragedy that SL is still in the top 60 list after the war. And to get better by only 4 positions is also a tragedy. Should have done much better than only 4 positions. Anyway, let's hope we are out of this list by next year.

ENW is still talking about HRs in 1956. Talk about Aushtwitz, Vietnam, etc. USA/EU violate human rights while selling HRs & preaching BANA. SL do not. That is the diffrence.

    Titta Tuesday, 21 June 2011 09:47 AM

We must be far better than this 29th. LTTE may be behind this.

Why don'y you people even don't bother to find out what failed state index really is.?Why are you just making fun out of our own country at the drop of a hat? Sri lanka ranks high partly because of social indicators given below

Demographic pressures,Massive movement of refugees and internally displaced peoples, Legacy of vengeance-seeking group grievance, Chronic and sustained human flight

Do you see that freedom of movement ( fear of bombs etc.) is not factored in ?
our low scores are to a larger extent due to the fact that INGO data is considered as accurate in preparing these

Mike. If there is religious freedom, why large number of Christian churches were burnt and Christians were assaulted .
I can imagine what happened in 1956 when it was declared that the Sinhala is the official Language.
All forget that Tamils are our brothers and sisters.

A failed state is one that has been unable to maintain an adequate level of efficiency in certain key areas like law and order, economic peformance etc.

    jp Tuesday, 21 June 2011 10:54 AM

Nothing wrong wit the country or its people..... we are proud Sri Lanakans.....were should be proud that we are born in a beautiful with rich natural resources and other natural wealth.... BUT THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE POLITICAL SYSTEM AND SOME POLITICIANS.....SOME OF THE POLITICIANS ARE LIKE JOKERS.....That's that main problem with this country..... the next generation should create some civilized political culture......they should be some standard for these politicians....... Then this country will be an example to others in the world....

    Ami Tuesday, 21 June 2011 11:47 PM

    daham Wednesday, 22 June 2011 12:03 AM

Most comments here are based on party politics (like everything else in SL). Those who support Rajapakse regime say the index is rubbish and those who are against the regime say the index is right.

We need to look at the stituation in perspective. A country's development and sanity are not measured by the number of BMWs, Jaguars and Prados on roads. It is measured by the level of democratic process in the country, maintenance of law and order and acceptable function of systems/institutional mechanisms of the country.

Based on these things one can make a judgement on SL and where the country falls in the world ranking.

    Thakaradappa Wednesday, 22 June 2011 12:01 AM

So if Lanka is at the 100th position, can we say hypocrites paid by GOSL were behind ?

Prashan Jayawardane Wednesday, 22 June 2011 12:46 AM

Sri lanka has failed as a result of it's people. Out of the 80% Sinhalese there's about 5% with brains. Out of the 12% Tamils there's about 95% with brains of which, most were forced to leave the country in 1983. In the other 8% there's about 90% who are Muslims and who are running the economy. The parliament has no power. Executive President is more powerful than any other post on this earth.

All the necessary criterion for another Zimbabwe is there at present and before another three years laps there will be a Rs. 10,000 note available.

    lal Wednesday, 22 June 2011 12:48 AM

True, if you don't do as you are told by US, UK you are a failed state. Simple. If you defeat terrorists without their consent you fail once more. If you kill Vietnamese, Iqaqis, Libyans, Afghans, you pass with distiction. Very fair test.

    l. perera Wednesday, 22 June 2011 12:59 AM

and now we shall admit and rectify our own mistakes this is straight forward

How do you define civilized,... MR is a lawyer by profession and hails from a good family as well, In case he had fit your agenda and your favourite party then I suppose he would be " civilized" in your books, whats wrong with people like you always bashing our fellow country men. Constantly saying Sri Lankans are foolish, illiterate blah blah blah and proudly say so too... Come on man!!!! granted everything is not perfect and hunky-dory ,But its far much better now than a few years ago....,

utter rubbish....this report based on inputs given by iNGOs, and we all know their agenda.
Check IMF, World Bank and independent investor reports for correct and up to date status.
We live in SL and we know whats going on. We are not ignorants!!

Over 300,000 hostages taken by the Tamil Tiger Terrorists were rescued by the SriLankan Govt and resettled after demining their residential areas. How can this be called a failed state? Economy is progressing rapidly, much faster than any of the Western Nations or any other nation except China - so how can this be a failed state? If this grading can be so inaccurate, it is possible the rest of gradings given to other nations are also utterly wrong and is merely the wishful thinking of powers behind this Foreign Policy Magazine.

The reasons given are hardly valid to make a failed state. Tourism has increased by 600%. Literacy level is very high. No bombs for more than 02yrs. People are free. Religious freedom is ample comparing with neighbors & gulf. Despite COL people are happy. Free education n medical in govt hospitals. Defeated terrorism. Problems we have are common all over the world. This is a highly bias report & will not affect SL at all. The defeat of terrorism has angered the west.

Winning the war wont decide whether its a failed state or not. There are lot of ways to win the war. Brutal one is, by damaging the .... .... etc etc and force the opponent to to give up the battle.

If the government could appoint a ` civilised` minister for higher education, one area could be recovered.

    Mifaz Wednesday, 22 June 2011 04:37 AM

I think only you have benefited from this govt. looking at the thums down for your comments.

    Niv Tuesday, 21 June 2011 09:44 AM

unemployment rate is not based on single person got employment and other one didn't get it. Its based on how many eligible to get a job and how many actually got the job. you are not a 'med student' actually 'mad student'

    sam Wednesday, 22 June 2011 04:36 AM

true. Only central bank figures can be trusted

    sunny Tuesday, 21 June 2011 03:59 PM

Guys wake up. Take the criticism to improve ourselves and show the world how powerful we are rather than just making mockery out of a report. Stop blaming others and blame yourself for not being a Bill gates for US , Gandi 4 India, Diana 4 UK or Ian Trope 4 Australia. They all uplifted their countries. What have we done to Sri Lanka?

    sara Wednesday, 22 June 2011 04:41 AM

Greece and Portugal are the No 1 failed states in the world now!! They are technically bankrupt & IMF has list them as most credit unowrthy country. This clearly shows how bias is this.. .. They dont add greece because it is EU member!!
