US Embassy Political Officer Jacob Chriqui said yesterday that the protestors from Vavuniya being prevented from coming to Colombo on Monday clearly showed the human rights situation in Sri Lanka.

“That is clearly a concern because the freedom to clearly express one’s opinion is universal. It is protected under Sri Lankan and International Law. And we hope this right will be protected. It is only one incident and it is one example of the larger concern. We must make sure that everyone in Sri Lanka enjoy the same rights and have the same opportunities for living in dignity,” he added.

He expressed these views when he met some civil society members and TNA parliamentarians in Vavuniya. (Romesh Madushanka)

Hey Mr. Jacob...I am a Sri Lankan living in CA, USA and don't think that we don't know what US Police is doing here and there. Don't you know that LA Police sprayed pepper cans straight into UCLA or UCSD students eyes once and we remember Rodey King incidents....these are huge HR violations too. Any country has right to protect its own people from thugs to avoid more troubles.

Uncle Sam must get his act together. Close Guantanamo bay where some innocents are being incarcerated under woeful conditions. They must stop bombing innocent Afghans, Palestinians and Syrians and stop state sponsored violence elsewhere. Uncle Sam had better read Malaka's letter on DM, sort out the ridgepole in your eye. It's cheaper to learn from others.

who gave power to talk about human right issues in Sri Lanka to this teenage looking guy ? he is just doing a clerical job in US embassy. If SL government continues to let this happen , for sure American housewives, drug dealers, prostitutes will issue statements about HR situation in Sri Lanka within next few months.

    Don Saturday, 09 March 2013 07:55 AM

This spokesman from US embassy is a kid and not qualified to issue statements on SL.When did he get of his diapers.About 5 years ago when people were getting bombed and killed when the economic development of SL was at the lowest level, were u even born then?

You have no right to comment on internal affairs of the country. Didn't you guys use force against the Tea Party gathering to disperse them? We know Sri Lanka is a big offender of rights, but we don't accept your opinion as you have a sinister agenda.
