A special police division will handle the traffic on the expressways that are to be set up shortly according to highly places sources at the Police Headquarters.

According to the police a new division is required since traffic regulations on the expressways are different from the normal traffic laws.

New regulations are now being drafted by the police for the expressways. The new division of expressways traffic is to be administered by a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) with powers vested similar to the Western Province Traffic DIG. Police officers would be recruited after undergoing a special training to control expressway traffic.

Traffic policemen representing the new division were to be recruited for duty in the Southern Expressways from Kottawa in the Colombo district to Pinnaduwa area in Galle which is to be opened for transport next month. (Daily Mirror online)

I am sure they have no idea what type of special security measures they need. Later on they will find all sorts of loop holes in the system and will realise how much mooney is wasted unnecessarily......

This is kind of nice - the highway is almost ready and the regulations are being drafted now. Like the commode is placed in the public toilet and the water connection is planned .. not quite but a little like it ne'?
It will be really nice if the various authorities, RDA, Police, Department of Motor Traffic start a public awareness campaign about the rules, about safety, manners, how to's .. because Sri Lanka has not had highways.. vettus and gundus might result in serious accidents .. the road manners will be very important.. people have to become aware, otherwise my karatththe will be run over by your Merc. And of course a whole new video industry of how Gunda in his Porche outran the police and now the police are asking for turbo charged or better like in Italy.. Oooh Lamborghini .. me, me me I want to join the highway patrol.
