Soldier kills 1, injures 3

A disgruntled soldier opened fire while on duty in Serunuwera, Trincomalee late last night killing one and injuring three others, including a lieutenant and a civilian, the Serunuwara police said.

According to the police a soldier was killed in the shooting and the suspect had fled together with his weapon following the incident.

The Serunuwara police have launched a search operation to locate the suspect. Investigations are underway. (Daily Mirror online)

    This is a common phenomenon in a country recovering from a long drawn out conflict, especially when large armed forces are involved. Athourities will have to take strong measures to instill discipline not only in the forces, but SL society in general.

    The war mentality: idle hands are like a devil's workshop. The government should devise schmes to utilise this idle manpower in agriculture, construction etc.
