Private Transport Minister C.B. Rathnayake said that a smart card system would be introduced to all private busses from March 1.

He also said that subject to approval of bus unions, the semi-luxury class of bus services would be terminated from March 1.

Speaking to Daily Mirror the Minister said he believed that the so called semi-luxury bus service had caused injustice to commuters.

who will monitor whether passengers are punching their Cards?
will they fix camera inside the busses???this will be nice idea but it is worrisome idea for buss jackers....lol

    Naleer Friday, 15 February 2013 12:01 PM

Superb idea , Many never beg forget for a rupee or 2 balance. income cuts for conductors.

    Soosh Friday, 15 February 2013 12:19 PM

2.1 Specially Fix the leaks!!!! When it rains outside, it rains inside busses!! Might aswell have walked in the rain sometimes!

buffaloa citizen Friday, 15 February 2013 12:24 PM

And the other passengers like "pansy" kept quiet, correct?

    Sue Friday, 15 February 2013 12:23 PM

    A strike on the horizon

    innocent-passenger Friday, 15 February 2013 12:37 PM

put a soldier in all private buses and make sure the law and rule of the road is maintained. Their are plenty of Army soldiers who are not doing anything these days.

    innocent-passenger Friday, 15 February 2013 12:39 PM

You need good public transport first before you even think of introducing cards. Most ridiculous thing I've heard all day..

straight record Friday, 15 February 2013 02:35 PM

A soldier is the worst possible solution, unless of course you want a militarized society.

    sach Friday, 15 February 2013 02:42 PM

you shud have taken the number of the bus and inform the authorities.

    Sareek Friday, 15 February 2013 11:54 AM

Terminate indian buses using as intercity.

    Mushi Friday, 15 February 2013 12:00 AM

He is minister of private transport only? so 2 ministries for transport. waste of money via DM Android App

wimal modawanasa Friday, 15 February 2013 05:50 PM

PRVITATE TRANSPORT MINISTER HAS TO EARN MONE.SMART CARD IS DE WAY. HOW MANY CENTS DO YOU GET IDIOT?

    PRASANNAJIT Saturday, 16 February 2013 05:19 AM

These semi luxery buses should be banned. They provide only dirty and filthy curtains and charges similar to luxery bus rates.

    RamUk Saturday, 16 February 2013 08:56 AM

Dont coy luxury advance ideas from west but the economy and legal system right before copy advance ideas they have to remember they are 3rd world country

    dujohn18 Saturday, 16 February 2013 01:56 PM

Very good move. They charge more but stop at all the halts. There should be a strict regulation for the places the buses stop for refreshment since those places serve only the drivers and conductors to rob the commuters

    Thomas Saturday, 16 February 2013 02:33 PM

First ban the Drivers & Condutors Sewing Betal while on duty. Most driver spit while driving and the spit sprays on the passengers seated on the right side seats of the bus

    Shiffy Saturday, 16 February 2013 03:07 PM

True and I was thinking of the same idea. there are semi-luxury buses with exactly the same facilities as the normal buses but they charge 50% more in fees!! i always face this problem. excellent decision. no need to consult the bus associates, make it an order. and smart cards is also a welcomed decision. this is a step of development. people will get used to this system.

    zamee Friday, 15 February 2013 12:00 AM

good idea via DM Android App

    weha Friday, 15 February 2013 09:56 AM

and i don't about smart cards and how efficient they will be. most of the busses don't have working ticket machines and lot of commuters don't understand the fare and stuff. so looks like it is going to be a nice racket for the bus owners.

    mofaruk Friday, 15 February 2013 10:00 AM

Govt should done this ages ago, any way a good move.
But I hope they keep the card reader in working order all time otherwise it's going be "give me money" again!

    ambaruwa Friday, 15 February 2013 09:59 AM

its a good step by the government other wise its a daily battle with the conductor asking for the balance

    DHA Friday, 15 February 2013 10:03 AM

    Pssst....sir whats my cut ???

    Achcharu Friday, 15 February 2013 10:01 AM

Lets scope its not another mere revenue stream and a 'justice' to the cummutors

    HK Friday, 15 February 2013 10:03 AM

Something to earn from private bus to CTB from this and increase the fair again poor people have to buy the cards again....

    hikz Friday, 15 February 2013 10:11 AM

Minister please do the first thing first not the last..

    Geriatrix Friday, 15 February 2013 10:18 AM

why not provide NFC support? Since new phones are having this feature, wont it be worth while ??

    weha Friday, 15 February 2013 09:48 AM

Let me give you some more ideas,
1.Make it compulsory for luxury buses only take people to the seating capacity. most are like normal private buses.
2.Also the vehicles should be maintained properly.
3.Try to make the driver and conductor have a better dress code (normal office attire with rubber shoes or something) right now you don't know who is a beggar and who is the conductor.
4.Give targets for the CTB buses. most run without people even though the pvt buses on that route is crowded.
    5. give the buses a minimum speed limit, maximum time that can stop at a bus stop.
there are more things that should be changed. but i hardly think this will reach the ears of those responsible. so thats it for now.

    ind Friday, 15 February 2013 10:22 AM

Good. It's better if it can be merge with trains like in Singapore.

    Liyakath Friday, 15 February 2013 10:24 AM

What a country is this? Now only I came to know that we have two ministers for transport. One is Public transport & other one is Private transport.

straight record Friday, 15 February 2013 10:29 AM

Re points 3 & 5: Most drivers and conductors look worse than beggars: dirty clothes, unshaven, betel chewing and spitting.
don't you mean 'maximum speed limits?" Two weeks ago I complained quite loudly to the driver and conductor a a bus on route 138 from Fort to Pannipitiya about the reckless, speeding driving, racing with other buses on that route, breaking unexpectedly and forcefully, and what did I get? A bottle of water thrown on me by the conductor once I got off the bus.

    weha Friday, 15 February 2013 10:34 AM

Don't jump to conclusions dude. you never know how secure these cards are and how they work. i bet that once this starts people will think losing a rupee or two would have been batter than losing a hell lot of more from the card.
I don't think our country is still up to the standard to use something like this. during crowded hours not sure how they will handle it.

    SH Friday, 15 February 2013 10:35 AM

HK pls be positive if some good things are happening in the country without giving sarcastic comments as u do always...

is It Made In China. Or There Maybe Many Breakdowns

Lucky Weeramantry Friday, 15 February 2013 10:46 AM

Another Suggestion. The Card Reader Should Stop When The Seats Are Full. Then We Can Travel In Comfort.

    Lobo Friday, 15 February 2013 11:51 AM

Weha, good suggestions. But no use of rules and systems if there is no one to monitor them. Along with the rules we there must also be enforcement and punishment for wrongdoers otherwise the laws are just a joke.
