The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) headed by President Maitripala Sirisena and its newly appointed officials are contemplating the termination of its political affiliation with the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA), informed sources said yesterday.

The SLFP is the main constituent of the UPFA which was formed in 2004. Its other constituent parties are the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP), Sri Lanka Mahajana Party (SLMP), Desavimukthi Janatha Party (DJP), the Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) and the National Unity Alliance (NUA).

The Communist Party (CP), the Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP) and the National Freedom Front (NFF) had aligned with the UPFA though not being members of the alliance and governed by its constitution.

The present SLFP leadership believes that the alliance partners had gained the upper hand in the UPFA by pushing aside the SLFP. They were in the forefront of the 'bring back Mahinda campaign' and had backed former President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the general election.

Meanwhile, the UPFA allies are consulting legal experts over the possibility of retaining the UPFA’s betel symbol in case SLFP breaks ranks with the alliance. A section in the SLFP is also not in favour of moving away from the UPFA.

Hon: MS should have done this long time ago. if it was done at the correct time we would have had a cleaner parliament today. However, better late than never.

Since the President was backed by UNP in the presidential election,it proper his party SLFP be a coalition partner of UNP.

Did any of you vote for UPFA or UNP?

    shama Monday, 24 August 2015 01:42 PM

Agreed 100%.These small parties do not think of the country.

Terminating the political affiliation with the small parties in the UPFA is a good move even though it is a bit late. This should have been done before the election and would have ensured the end of the political careers for Vasu, Dinesh, Udaya, Wimal and his blabbering party members. Country would have been better of without these undemocratic, negative minded politicians.

A very wise and good decision by the President. The SLFP should not aline with these small parties are they are more interested in their survival than the wellbeing of the people of Sri Lanka.

Have a spine SLFP. Your votes are being robbed by hang on parties, and your members get kicked out .

    Welivita Monday, 24 August 2015 09:56 AM

This must happen soon. Ensure that you include all the religious leaders in this party.

It is the General Public of Sri Lanka who has the right and power to decide as to who should govern the country for the next five years. They have decided that.It is wrong for the political parties to wrest that power assuming that they are not fallible even without the vote of the general public. This principle applies to National list aspirants who think that they have the right to rule the nation even if they are not chosen by by the party heard.

The best thing that could happen to Sri Lanka!

    Bala Monday, 24 August 2015 07:47 AM

The best escnario would be if some good My3 supporting SLFPers breakaway and join govt as SLFPers and the other SLFP discards join the UPFA discards to form the opposition.

    Vedamanikkam Monday, 24 August 2015 07:29 AM

Good riddance of bad rubbish !

    Premalal Monday, 24 August 2015 07:14 AM

It is a very sensible move. The tail had been wagging the dog for too long.
