Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said on Saturday that the Sri Lankan Security Forces should be geared to face the future terrorist threats across the borders of the country.

Speaking at the Palali Security Base, Mr. Wickremesinghe said the Sri Lankan Army, Navy and the Air-force should be modernized and equipped to face these threats.

“We will have to think of the new roles that our forces will have to play when the South Asian region develops,” he said.

He said the Sri Lankan Security Forces should be geared to face challenges that the South Asian region might face by 2025.

“Sri Lanka should enhance its military force in addition to the region’s economic strength,” he said.

Mr. Wickremesinghe said the situation would be the same with the police. He said some 400 male and 200 female constables would be recruited to the Police from Jaffna.

He encouraged the forces to not live in the past, but to look for challenges that lie in the future. (YP)

Ranil was the one that saved SL from an economic crisis in 2001, He was the one who took Karuna to our side behind the curtains of the Peace talks.Ranil is a modern liberal politician that sees what needs to be done in the future.

    BuffaloaCitizen Monday, 30 March 2015 11:18 AM

If we look what Ranil states and comments made in this column, Sinhalese clearly have insecurity coupled with racism ingrained in their minds. This happens when leaders keep harping statements belittling minorities to gain confidence of majorities

    Jagath Monday, 30 March 2015 09:55 AM

Our military is really outdated we still use the Old t-55 from the 1950s we need to modernize the military fast

    Saman Monday, 30 March 2015 09:54 AM

    Patriot Monday, 30 March 2015 09:31 AM

Well said Prime Minister, the armed forces should have capabilities to deal with any future threats. We should engage alongside India and the west in developing our strategies.

    Rohan Monday, 30 March 2015 09:00 AM

Trying to Score points. I wonder why he did not do this when terrorism was on . If he did that instead of trying to selll off Sri lanka to Prabha, instead of SF he should have been the field marshal. Ha ha

    MSR Monday, 30 March 2015 08:14 AM

Diplomatic way of saying "terrorism on rise".

    hari Monday, 30 March 2015 06:44 AM

Threat from whom Prime minister? If you provide people with opportunity and prosperity, will they blow them off or kill each other? By nature humans are happy and peaceful souls. Lost all respect for this man, who is just war mongering rather than eradicating corruption and poverty.

Suren Abeyagoonasekera Monday, 30 March 2015 06:22 AM

I appreciate your concern in National Security PM. Thank you,

    Citizen Monday, 30 March 2015 06:12 AM

RW. YOU ARE A FAMOUS DREAMER

    tissa.fonseka Monday, 30 March 2015 05:15 AM

Mr Prime Minister.if you sincerely feel that there is a threat from the borders may i suggest you,to get Field Marshal Sarath Foneka to the cabinet and give him the responsibility of the defense .He has been proven and tested on the field beyond any doubt.

    J Palitha Monday, 30 March 2015 05:06 AM

Are you playing games like MR? This is an Election gundoo.

Vijith Pieterz Monday, 30 March 2015 05:01 AM

Horri Jimonis Monday, 30 March 2015 05:00 AM

PM - please deploy more armed security personal in the North.

Desmond Jeromme Monday, 30 March 2015 04:57 AM

MR showed off that he won the battle against terrorist, now you are playing the same game. Is this subject is a "Political Game" for both?

Kiris Baba Amaray Monday, 30 March 2015 04:55 AM

Mr. RW, MR says he geared the Security Forces and won the battle against the nasty terrorist LTTE. Now you say to gear-up our Security Forces. How do you predict another terrorist attack again in SriLanka.

    Mevan Monday, 30 March 2015 04:50 AM

Very true. With constantly changing geo-political situations our security forces should be geared to face these situations. An example is the ISIL threat. Further our forces should be trained to handle emergency situations arising from natural disasters which are common in this country

    simon Monday, 30 March 2015 03:40 AM

Did he show the same concern before !!

    Soldier Monday, 30 March 2015 03:04 AM

He also should know to stop tarnishing the names of war heros, who worked hard to win the freedom. Now He talks, but all along supported LTT.

    Waco Monday, 30 March 2015 03:03 AM

It is not a bad idea to upgrade and improve the quality of the ration pack.

    Nims Monday, 30 March 2015 12:41 AM

Difficult to understand who is telling the truth. Very controversial statements by the Prime Minister and his Foreign Minister.

    Waco Monday, 30 March 2015 12:29 AM

As the Priminister of Sri Lsnka, have you ever been to see Dis-Able soldiers in any of the facilities?
