Sri Lanka could see a great transformation in the next 15 years with the launching of a trilingual policy, former President of India Abdul Kalam said today.

Mr. Kalam, former president of India who is Sri Lanka on a five day official visit, made this observation when he met the media today in Colombo.

He said that trilingualism will naturally lead to racial amity in the country.

"I had a discussion with President Mahinda Rajapakse on the practical aspect of implementing the trilingual policy, the 13th amendment plus and the fisheries issue," Mr. Kalam said.

Former President Kalam said that he has had a close association with Indian fisherman and knows the ins and outs of their problem and therefore shows a great interest in resolving their problem.

"Fishermen are naturally enticed by shoals of fish irrespective of national border. Hence it’s difficult to enforce rigid borders regarding fishing," he said. He added, "

I have proposed two solutions to President Mahinda Rajapakse about the fishermen issue."

Firstly, one day in a week is to be observed as a holiday by both parties and the other days should be reserved alternatively for exclusively for Indian and Sri Lankan fishermen. The second proposal is to encourage deep sea fishing with modern boats where the fish can be canned without delay. "This will keep the fishermen active on all days and increase their income that would lead to less tension on the shared fishing ground,” he said adding, "These are my proposal and it is up to the governments to consider this."
