Sri Lanka has claimed the highest spot in the global ease of doing business ranking in the South Asian region while bettering its ranking to 81 from 89, a report issued by the World Bank and International Finance Corporation (IFC) showed.

According to the report, from June 2011 to June 2012, Sri Lanka implemented the most regulatory reforms among the eight economies covered in South Asia, helping to create a better environment for local entrepreneurs.

'Doing Business 2013: Smarter Regulations for Small and Medium-Size Enterprises' report also ranked Sri Lanka among the 10 economies globally that improved the most in the past year across three or more areas measured by the report.

Singapore remained the easiest place in the world to do business, followed by Hong Kong, New Zealand and the United States.

In South Asia Maldives was ranked 95, Pakistan 107, Nepal 108, Bangladesh 129, India 132, Bhutan 138 and Afghanistan 168.a

Sri Lanka has to learn so much from Singapore. They should come here and have a study, how Singapore government is facilitating for the business. Everything is staright and no need to beg to any one.

I'm astonished to see how negative people can be. Yes I agree SL has a long way to go to become a true investor friendly nation. But please give credit where it’s due. We need to applaud even the small steps we as a nation are taking towards development rather than being pessimistic and negative about each and everything. I guess that's just the Sri Lankan way - Be as negative as can be but expect the sun and the moon in terms of development. I think we all need to be optimistic and positive about the future of our country. Only then can we work tirelessly towards development, while appreciating and recognizing the little milestones we reach along the way. However if I may qualify my statement above, by being optimistic does not mean we need to turn a blind eye to the political corruption and mismanagement that’s happening right now. We need to continue to voice our displeasure and pressure the government to do the right thing while also commending their good work.

Big Ears Tuesday, 23 October 2012 06:54 AM

Now we can see how close these ranking are at the bottom end.
