The Kottawa Ananda Vidaylaya Principal, who was remanded on charges of having solicited a sexual bribe from a child’s mother, was today released on bail by a Colombo Court.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya also warned the suspect Mahanama Geeganage Dharmadasa to refrain from intimidating or interfering with the complainant or the prosecution witnesses.

The Magistrate said bail would be cancelled if he received any complaints of intimidation or interference.

He told the suspect that the offence he is alleged to have committed was of a serious nature but Court granted him bail after considering the plight of his family.

The suspect was arrested on a complaint that he had solicited a sexual bribe from a woman who had sought admission for her child to the grade one at Ananda College in Kottawa for next year.

Opanayake Anusha Arundathi had complained to the Bribery Commission that when she met the principal to seek admission for her child he had asked her to come to a guesthouse at Werahera for a sexual odyssey as a bribe if he was to admit her child to school.

Bribery Commission officials had raided the guest house and arrested the suspect.

The case was postponed for October 23. (T. Farook Thajudeen)

Timely arrest and putting on legal process is wrong? When you insult legal authorities when they do their job properly, will they want to do it next time?

This is the so-called Chinthanaya. This type of things happen from the top most place to even schools now. Big guns get billions as bribes while these type of people getting these type of bribes. Only the offenders who don't have political backups are prosecuted. Nobody can rely on the justice all depends on the power. I even can't think where Sri Lanka is heading. At least you intelligent people don't react against this, one day we will feel we would have been better off under LTTE than this regime.

This is nothing man, There was a principle in Ratnapura who had a reputation for child abuse. Whatever it is, we must not vilify a person until he is proven guilty.

REVERTING BACK TO THE BARTER SYSTEM - BUT THE BENEFIT OF DOUBT IS CASTE TO THE SOLICITATION THERE BEING NO CONSUMATION OF THE BRIBE SOLICITED.

Sex is a such beautiful thing in nature. So why this guy go to such obnoxious extent to gratify him in this manner is dilemma to the morally and ethically bound civilized society. Only perverts behave like this putting humanity into such low level, especially some child's mother is involved in this case.

Can you trust the woman? A person is innocent till proved guilty. Or so I thought.

    mahalingam Thursday, 19 September 2013 02:08 AM

i don't see any fault with him. i consider the act as a favor, not a bribe. simple as you help i help. it's a well known fact that now days, parents pay as 100,000 to 800,000 for putting their children to top colombo schools. so comparing to that, this principal is more reasonable to be flexible on poor parents who has no big money. end of the day, most women go out of the way when ever they get a chance...just like men.

SACK HIM AND PUT HIM BEHIND BARS FOR LIFE , HOW CAN HE MANAGE STUDENTS , A PRINCIPAL HAS MORE RESPONSIBILITY THAN A FATHER , IF HE DOES THINGS THIS MANNER , HOW CAN ANY CHILD BE SECURED. HUMAN BRUTE FOR LUST.

    CHANDRAPALA Thursday, 19 September 2013 02:58 AM

We have never herd this type of bribe during the days of our school. Today teachers are not allowed to punish children. But in the good old days the theme is "Spare the rod spoil the child" Today, no discipline among the school children. No moral values in our society. Who is responsible for this? Teachers or parents?

    Channa Thursday, 19 September 2013 03:12 AM

only the small fish get caught....there are Principles of much bigger schools who does the same..unfortunately the Mothers in those cases doesn't complain much and the authorities are silent as well. but the biggest puzzle is all the names are released to the media in a sensitive case like this and not the name of the restaurant chain that purchased expired goods?

Before coming to a conclusion, must study the background of the complainant. Coin has two sides. Principal wouldn't have asked her unless he had a sufficient encouragement.

Should have done an impartial investigation before releasing names on media. If later the accused is innocent then how can the media reverse the stress the accused underwent. Should be more careful before releasing names or pictures.
