The committee that probed the controversial construction of a road through the Sinharaja rain forest has suggested that another committee comprising officials of the Forest Conservation Department, Land Reforms Commission, Central Environment Authority, the Divisional Secretariat and the Pradeshiya Sabha should look into the issue and make recommendations.

The road construction was suspended last week after protests by environmental activists and forest conservation officials. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) too had called for a report from the environment ministry as the Sinharaja Forest Reserve is a World Heritage Site. If, as the Government spokesman stated the road is on 'private land' , then it is within the power of the government to acquire this land for the common good in the interests of the nation! Not to seek a 'compromise'!!

If the land is private, the government should take steps to acquire to acquire it to save the only virgin rainforest in the island. Those who want a road and more amenities should be compensated and relocated in another area as is done in Colombo. Some dimwits apparently do not understand the importance of Sinharaja.
