UNP Co-Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa is to make a crucial announcement with regard to the future of the party today, informed sources told Daily Mirror last night.

The announcement is to be made following a meeting of the UNP reformists led by Mr. Premadasa at his residence last evening to discuss the party’s future. Several MPs including Rosy Senanayake, Talatha Athukorala and Imitiaz Bakeer Markar had participated at the meeting.

Mr. Premadasa when contacted by Daily Mirror confirmed that he would make such an announcement but did not divulge any details. “You will get to know everything tomorrow,” he said.

Meanwhile another MP (a Premadasa loyalist) said they had had a serious discussion about the future of the party.  “We will reveal our future plans at the right time,” this MP said.

Sources said the announcement would be regarding a decision which the reformists group had made in a bid to put a stop to the repeated electoral defeats which the party had suffered at recent elections.

UNP suffered yet another defeat in the recently concluded local government election for 65 local bodies on Saturday.

Mr. Premadasa in March this year accepted the deputy leadership of the party and also agreed to act as the assistant leader of opposition. This was despite wide speculation at that time that a secret ballot would be held at the Party Working Committee to elect a new leader as per the newly adopted party constitution.

It is widely speculated that Mr. Premadasa would make a fresh bid for the leadership again.

Try to re-establish democracy in the party by allowing the majority will of the elected members of the UNP, including local government and provincial councils.

    Lankatarzan Thursday, 28 July 2011 06:10 AM

The ONLY way out for the UNP from this mess is to make Karu the leader. Both Ranil and Sajith have no national acceptance.

    Gamarala Thursday, 28 July 2011 05:48 PM

Ane Kiri puthayo, Ranil nam honda ne thamai. Namuth Sajitha appa wage unoth Umbatai matai dennata hangenna than hoyaganna wenawa.

Sajith....you dont have to make an annoucement... because you are already in... the government side

Independent Observer Thursday, 28 July 2011 02:17 AM

It's high time that Mr Ranil Wickremasinghe steps down , if he has the interests of the country , and that of the UNP at heart . He should not wait until he is kicked out !!!!

    Dammika Thursday, 28 July 2011 02:15 AM

Something similar to Hashan's announcement ? (pus wedi)

JUNIOR CITIZEN Thursday, 28 July 2011 02:18 AM

    He will be duped again

kattai jeya Thursday, 28 July 2011 06:36 AM

There is no democracy in UNP today. Ranil will ever give up his leadership. He has the full backing of MR.

    willows Thursday, 28 July 2011 06:39 AM

Sajith you need to take the leadership with Karu and GSF is ever UNP to come to power and save mother Sri Lanka

    Athens Thursday, 28 July 2011 02:52 AM

Hope this time the announcement will be a good one for the country and UNP

    Gamarala Thursday, 28 July 2011 03:01 AM

Both Ranil and Sajith are responsible for this? Sajith is not mature enough to give the leadership to UNP.

    latha Thursday, 28 July 2011 07:14 AM

    He is a empy man

    joe Thursday, 28 July 2011 03:12 AM

you.re the one and only remain in the party to win the peoples' heart,so take a crucial action to reverse the journey.

    chitra. Thursday, 28 July 2011 07:30 AM

Wait until Sanga takes up politics until then there will NEVER be a leader of opposition to fight back for DEMOCRACY.

    Haffie Thursday, 28 July 2011 03:10 AM

Only way for the UNP to grab power is to replace the present globetrotting leader with Sajith.

    uglytruth Thursday, 28 July 2011 03:26 AM

So Sajith can continue on making announcements while Ranil remain in Leadership...

    Jeyaraj. Thursday, 28 July 2011 03:37 AM

The best announcement Sajith can make is to say that he is ready to unite and work together as one party without differences, for the benefit of the party as well as the millions of UNP followers and also those who are waiting to join him if and when they are united. You are the one who can forget and finish the past and build a strong opposition.Give hope and interest to the people, and they will follow you.Don't forget that there have been UNPers even before you were born and still they are with you.It is OUR party more than YOURS.

We want sajith and the progressive UNPers in thje leadership.

    Ryan Thursday, 28 July 2011 03:45 AM

UNP is dead political party, best thing is to scrap UNP and establish new right wing party

OLIVER LIYANAGE Thursday, 28 July 2011 03:48 AM

Ranil is not a leader in the true sense.he should step down
sooner the better for the party as well as for the country.
UNP can easily come to power soon if the leader is dynamic
    enough.

KIRI PUTHA Thursday, 28 July 2011 03:43 AM

hik hik. RW is over matured. that is why UNP lose all elections. Ane gamarala umbai mamai danna MATURITY.

Lanke Banda Thursday, 28 July 2011 08:09 AM

Only until he gets Cold Feet again.

    Hemantha K Thursday, 28 July 2011 03:53 AM

Sajith only talks about petty issues at Hambanthota or Infamous Premadasa Era. Reformists have to find a better Leader if they want to oust Ranil.

    Weda Thursday, 28 July 2011 04:04 AM

We hope at least this time you will take the correct decision for the sake of the party. If not you will destroy yourself as well as party too.
Show us that you have a strong backbone.

    acshameed Thursday, 28 July 2011 08:29 AM

we want sajith as party leader,,,,,,
