Sajith hits out at US-resolution

The US- resolution on Sri Lanka filed at the UN Human Rights Council is a violation of the UN charter and an infringement of internal affairs of a country, UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa said yesterday.

Sharing his views on the Geneva resolution with the Daily Mirror, Mr. Premadasa said it violated article 2.4 of the UN Charter which said that all members of the UN should refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations.

"Those countries that accuse Sri Lanka of violating human rights should look through a mirror and see to themselves the crimes that have been committed by their own armed forces,” the UNP Deputy Leader said.

He said all people in Sri Lanka should come together in countering this move irrespective of political, religious or communal differences.

However, he said it is the present government that had left room for the international community to act against Sri Lanka. Mr. Premadasa said the Sri Lankan government had missed a wonderful opportunity it had to put in place a reconstruction, rehabilitation plan for the North and to bring about reconciliation.     We should have united front against US. Let it be SLFP or UNP. Sri Lanka is our motherland. What they are trying to do is destroy the winners of War and prop up the looser.     No one can bring any resolutions against LTTE, because they are not legitimate government as well they have not signed all these international treaties.. They were branded by most countries as terrorist organization...     this statement proves the deep division within UNP since UNP leader Ranil asks its members to refrain from any comment on UNHR session. It is an indication, Sajit would eventually join with SLFP. We will have to wait and see.

    Anyone can make statements, but before we throw such statements, we need to see what we could do practically. We are just 20Million; we can't changed other countries. Whether we like it or not we have to accept the fact that we have to listen to so called big nations. That's how UN works.
