Rs.7500 enough for family of three-Bandula

19 March 2012 07:41 pm - 106     - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}

A A A

Minister of Education Bandula Gunawardena said a family of three could live a comfortable life with an income of Rs.7500 per month if they used their money wisely.

Addressing a gathering at the opening ceremony of the Maternity and Childcare Centre at Mullegama in Homagama he pointed out that if people refrained from wasteful expenditure they could live happier, fuller and pleasanter lives.

He went on to say, “The government’s budgeted income from taxation is only Rs.1000 billion and it is barely enough for recurrent expenditure. Under the circumstance the government is compelled to depend on foreign loans and aid to meet capital expenditure. The government obtains foreign loans for its development programmes that include highways, harbours, airports, hospitals, and new industries.  It is not possible to develop a country unless it obtains foreign loans. Farmer organizations have demanded an increased purchase price for paddy. It is quiet easy to increase the guaranteed price up to Rs.100 in five minutes by a cabinet decision. However, farmers  must not forget that the with a increase in the paddy purchasing price the price of rice will go up to Rs.200. Policy planning is not easy as pasting posters. A measure of rice had once been the major factor in changing governments.

We never said that the price of rice will not increase. Salaries have increased in keeping with the increase in the price of goods. There was a time when the salary of a government servant was about Rs.80, but present day salaries are very much higher.

The Education Department runs student hostels in several schools where students have three square meals and two cups of tea a day for Rs.2500 a month. This is a clear indication that a family of three needs only Rs.7500 for a month if they manage their expenses properly. Many individuals are in the habit of wasting their hard earned money having meals at hotels and restaurants. Recently I was invited to a function at a hotel that charged Rs.6500 for lunch per head. We must avoid such wasteful expenditure and guard our expenses.

The number of cellular phone in use in the country exceeds the population. Many individuals are using super- luxury cars at tremendous costs. It is in doubt whether they really need such expensive vehicles. No government has been able to contain the increasing cost of living. The prices of goods in 1960’s have increased by a large margin by the year 2000, and it will increase further by the year 3000. Then people living in 3000 will say that the prices of goods were much less in the year 2000, just as we talk about the prices of goods in the 1960s.” (Muditha Dayananada)

    He should start living with Rs.7500.00 first.

    sam Tuesday, 20 March 2012 01:44 AM

    Lets see you walk to talk. Why don't you ask that your salary is reduced to Rs7,500/- and show the people how you manage on this first then your colleagues can follow suit. Now I am sure who taught Cabral economics.

    jayasuriya Tuesday, 20 March 2012 01:52 AM

    then all ministers shold have to paid 7,500/= all inclusive salary

    Aku Aku Tuesday, 20 March 2012 01:52 AM

    Certainly, sans water, electricity, house rent, school fees, medicines,clothes,bus fare, kerosene, bread, parippu, dried sprats potatoes, onions, garlic, most vegetables,chilli powder, pepper, coconut,coconut oil, flour,fruits(local) soap, tooth paste, tea, sugar etc...etc. Just forget, chicken, fish, beef, gas,TV, Radio, newspapers, noodles, chick peas, green peas, pappadam and many more so called poor man's luxuries. Bandula must be crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hamza Tuesday, 20 March 2012 02:01 AM

    This minister of education should be sent back to school..Ok give us an itinerary for Rs.7500 we really want to see this and follow it. if these are the caliber of people managing are ministry MR should be ashamed. The bus fair alone for a month for a family of three just to work/school and back is more than Rs7500 that is without any weekend joyrides.

    SM Tuesday, 20 March 2012 02:06 AM

    I'm sure he can, because he is only considering 3 meals and two cups of tea a day. He is not going to use water, electricy, transport, clothing, medical expenses, furniture, white goods, home repairs, rates, taxes rent etc. etc. etc

    YES Mr. Minister, its possible in MIRACLE OF ASIA only , where Gas Rs. 250/-, 1kg of rice Rs.10/-, any vegetable 1kg less than Rs.15/-, 1 lt of petrol Rs.30/- ???? this how you think??? may because you guys are getting paid in Millions !!!!!
    complete madness !!!

    Is that in Indian Rupees?

    Chanaka Tuesday, 20 March 2012 02:20 AM

    Not even one person could live with even 15,000/- Does he and family live like that ?

    km Tuesday, 20 March 2012 02:08 AM

    I don't know what these guys are saying! student hostels takes only 2500 person for meals, meaning that a family of three will need 7500 according to him but if you add travelling cost, gas ( I don't think guy knows that to cook you need gas), increasing electricity, water bill can we still live by earning 7500 Rs Minister?? forget about the luxury cars! obviously a person who earns 7500 wont even think of buying such a valuable asset! these guys should be sent to a mental hospital firstly!! otherwise this country will become a joke!!

    Jasaya Tuesday, 20 March 2012 02:12 AM

    He said 7500 salary well enough to manage 3 members family.
    i think that he is living with memory before year 2000. now a days typical gas cylinder praise is nearly Rs. 2000. So ones family buy gas cylinder then they have only Rs 5500 for all other expenses. such as water, electricy, transport, clothing, medical expenses, furniture, white goods, home repairs, rates, taxes rent tuition fees (coz of sri lankan education system's bugs)
    Before You tell that shaow u how do this. even U can not do this. U have to pay one two lacks for ur children education coz of all are learning america

    i wonder how you tought econ once a upon a time. i think its better to start reducing the salaries and perks( luxury vehicles, etc) given to the ministers and then see whether they can live with 2500/= per person. if they can live , then im sure we too can live!!!! dear minister, pl. be on this earth before talking.

Is the minister willing to advise his cabinet to cut down the full-flight travels to UN, Commonwealth and other conferences? Why can't they stay at a service apartment or a motel and make their own meals and save tax payers money.

    Please stop talking rubbish minster, my blood is boiling..

    Sumathipala Tuesday, 20 March 2012 05:04 AM

    This is a clear indication that if you eat in the parliament canteen luxury food like prawns for years for a nominal fee of Rs. 100/-,
    get all expenses like meals and drinks in restaurants, petrol, even the residence costs paid, one loose the touch to the reality. These people don't know even what costs occur in the daily life. The y don't know the price how much vegetables and other things cost. If this is so any minister should step down, because if they don't understand the grievances of the people, they cannot represent them. Now it is so that no minister is concerned about the citizens anymore. If the citizens make their voice heard on the road they are treated with water canons, batons or later abducted.The ministers are serving themselves.

    one day expense allowance is 250/- is for
    Meals 50 x 3 = 150
    plain tea (adu seeni) 10 x 3 = 30
    Transport = 18
    Electricity (450/30) = 15
    Soap = 35
    See with all these expenses still the family is left with 2/= which could be used for savings or to have a beedi..

    Arecanut Monkey Tuesday, 20 March 2012 06:15 AM

    , this shows and proves the knowledge that the ruling politicians have with regard to the problems of the masses. So how can they serve the general public. They only help themselves. I think the ruling politicians are richer than the Maharajahs in India. "If you have no bread, eat pizzas".

    What a pathetic display of cynicism from a former Economics Tutor, turned UNP Minister, and Turncoat, who crossed over to enjoy the vast pecuniary privileges appropriated by Ministers, Deputy Ministers and other Political functionaries. These Parasites living off the poor public of a Third World country has the audacity to utter such lies !

    Food & beverage budget for Sri Lankan by Education Minister Bandula G.
    Total Budget = Rs 2,500/-

    Tea /person/day/month = Rs 15 x 1 x 2 x 30 = Rs 900/-

    Food/person/day/month = Rs 2,500 – Rs 900 (Tea)
    = Rs 1600 /1 person /3 meals/30 days
    =Rs 18/- per meal

    I'm student i lived in colombo. Two years back my individual expense was Rs.15 000 per month. Including Room Rent + other expenses. I really dont understand the magic behind Rs.7500 family budget. It is insane even if u are thinking about it.. I don't think that it would be possible even in dream.
