The CID today informed the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court that they were unable to record statements from the two Romanian nationals who were arrested for allegedly withdrawing more than 2.4 million rupees using fake Credit Cards.

The CID told court that since the suspects had requested that their statements be recorded in their language, steps would be taken to facilitate it in the future.
Additional Magistrate Ruchira Weliwatta ordered that the two Romanians be remanded till November 16.(Suranjith Perera)

Wonder if they filled up their arrival forms at the airport in Romanian language too, to get their visas to land in Sri Lanka.

    Dismanirie Monday, 05 November 2012 09:31 AM

If they gave their statements in Romanian, they are invalid. So try them on the basis of the evidence and jail them.

The law allows statements in one of three languages, and only a legally certified translation into one of these three is admissible.

Better yet, keep them in remand until the Romanian Foreign Ministry sends a consular official to represent their case. That will take longer than any sentence they get...
