Public health officers conducted a raid on several restaurants in the Fort area today to check on the conditions and hygiene levels in which the food was being prepared.

The raid was conducted on restaurants situated near the Fort railway station and the Pettah vegetable market.

Samples of food from the restaurants were collected by the officers who said that many restaurants were currently preparing food in an unhygienic environment. (Daily Mirror online)

Cant we tie them to trees or, better still, make them eat that food in public?

Indrajith Wijesinghe Wednesday, 18 August 2010 11:54 AM

Good Move if it is with good intentions

    lakr Wednesday, 18 August 2010 09:27 AM

Good move. but I suspect that there are corrupt officials taking money from the hotel owners regularley in order for cover ups. we are happy if this is honest move.

    xlntgson Wednesday, 18 August 2010 09:57 AM

Honesty is the best policy, yes, policy only. Never implemented seriously.

First eliminate the 'kunu' inspectors under political influence and establish a flying squad of hygienically selected officers' outfit to deal with regularly.

Do we have a national policy on the small/medium size restaurants and have they communicated enough on same at the time of issuing license at least.

Gayan Samarasekara Wednesday, 18 August 2010 06:26 AM

Absolutely important. Once I visited a hotel in Pettah and there were about 7 or 8 dead cockroaches in the water sink, where the drinking water is given for people who are getting lunch there.

    gato Wednesday, 18 August 2010 10:19 AM

Good move! but we need consistent raids. we need raids on hotels, small kades, muslim kades like pillows. without wearing gloves they used to make kottu. we need raids in all the hotels, restaurants, lodge toilets and kitchens. We need raids in bars kitchen and toilets.

    Sanjaya Wednesday, 18 August 2010 10:21 AM

Last year we saw the star grade hotels taken to courts. Now the small and medium ones raided. Continue the good work. We have to thank those who are behind this move.

    Roshan Wednesday, 18 August 2010 06:46 AM

The health officers are looking for extra money, how many have been caught and charged by the court?
