Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake will be allowed to relinquish his duties soon, the government informed Parliament today.

It was also revealed that he had officially retired from his post with effect from 28th January 2002 and was requested to remain in the post till the independent elections commission is set up under the 17th Amendment to the Constitution enacted in 2001.

Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunawardene who revealed this matter in the House with regard to an oral question raised by UNP Kurunegala District MP Dayasiri Jayasekera, stated that the President will institute action in future to establish the Elections Commission constituted under the 18th Amendment.

Who will be the next election commissioner ???... Another appointment for someone from the Rajapaksha Family.

    Phil Sunday, 26 September 2010 02:06 AM

Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake is an honourable man who worked under difficult circumstances and under severe threat. Honesty and integrity need to be compromised when ones life is threatened. Dayananda, as Dr Wickramatillake indicated, could and certainly would come out with the truth one day.

Smart Aleck Sunday, 26 September 2010 01:58 AM

Yes. Just like his boss MR.

It is interesting to see that all the above comments are suggested just one thing. Nation will never forget your dishonest behavior at the last presidential election which changed the destiny of our country.

Concerned Citizen Saturday, 25 September 2010 07:06 AM

Good Question! Legally, the elections held are null and void as the results have been confirmed and announced by a person not having the powers of the Elections Commissioner!

Aiyo Silva Friday, 24 September 2010 10:07 PM

He needs to retire to have time to spend all his ill gotten gains after the last few elections.
Another man with no principes, who openly stated that the Elections were not fair and correct to only change his stance bythe next day and join MR to declare the winner.
Shameful to hold such a responsible and trusted position and let down the whole nation....May he feel miserable with the ill gottten gains and will not know true happiness.

    ASHA Saturday, 25 September 2010 06:00 AM

If with effect from 2002, what about the ' back-dated' eight years service? Any way,
    Long Live Master!
    God Bless you!

Above the crowd Saturday, 25 September 2010 04:44 AM

    You are a SICK person.

Dr Wickramatillake Saturday, 25 September 2010 03:12 AM

Go into exile and write your memoirs - PLEASE write the truth

    Ruki Saturday, 25 September 2010 02:46 AM

What duties did he do? Duty means doing work assigned with a sense of moral responsibility without regard to ones own person. You decide!

    M.Z. Deen Saturday, 25 September 2010 02:36 AM

I guess he'll also be rewarded with a foreign posting for all the "Services" he rendered to keep the family in power.

    bodhinath Saturday, 25 September 2010 02:26 AM

My dear fellow, You can retire as a happy man having enjoyed lot of perks after the Presidential Elections. We also think you are now cured of various illnesses which you mentioned when announcing the final election results. But Sir, You will have to endure and live with the guilty feeling of what you did to SF which I think can not be erased from your memory so easily. May God help you to have peace of mind...................

    Jayantha Saturday, 25 September 2010 02:22 AM

One cannot forget the way he was shivering and blabbering while giving the final "election results" making us believe the election was rigged and doubtful.

    Watchman Saturday, 25 September 2010 01:07 AM

    AT LAST...!
BUT U HAVE YR REPUTATION LOST...!!

    lankaputha Saturday, 25 September 2010 12:32 AM

Will appoint another boot liker for this positions so all ways the elections are fair and free. Only the oposition is doing all bad things in the elections here after. Jayaway lanka.

Smart Aleck Friday, 24 September 2010 11:12 PM

"Revealed" ? So you were hiding it all these years ! Why ? Doesn't this show that the Elections Commissioner was not impartial during the Presidential and General Elections?

    Elaris Friday, 24 September 2010 11:03 PM

If this officer has already retired, what authority he had to conduct all the elections held after, 28th January 2002.
