The Chief of Sri Lanka's government programme for the rehabilitation of terrorist suspects said many of the women released back to their communities are struggling to find work.

However, the Commissioner General of Rehabilitation, Brigadier General Sudantha Ranasinghe, has told Radio Australia that few of these women have been able to find work near their homes.

In the 12 months following the end of the Sri Lankan civil war, 8,000 people have been given vocational training as part of the government's rehabilitation programme.

Many of them have gone back to their communities in the country's north in the last six months. But, most were trained for jobs in the garment industry, which is centred in the capital, Colombo.

The Commissioner General has appealed to international donors and other organisations to set up income generating projects in the country's North to help solve the problem.
