The UNP members who decided to support the government during the vote on the constitutional amendments this week have warned that they will not hesitate to join the government if the UNP initiates disciplinary action against them.

UNP member Earl Gunasekera, speaking to Daily Mirror online, said that the decision taken by some UNP members to support the government at the vote was part of the democracy within the party to decide on anything as individuals.

He said if the UNP is to take disciplinary actions against them then similar action should be taken against UNP deputy leader Karu Jayasuriya for joining the government during the war and later rejoining the UNP.

Gunasekera warned that he and a few other UNP members who have decided to vote with the government for the constitutional reforms will not hesitate to even join the government if the UNP attempts to take against them.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka told Daily Mirror online last week that the UNP is taking steps to remove four senior members who have decided to vote with the government for the constitutional reforms.

As a result, four of the UNP’s senior members Abdul Cader, Lakshman Seneviratne, Earl Gunasekara and Manusha Nanayakkara may be removed from the party over the next few days, he said. (Daily Mirror online)
