The United National Front (UNF) will contest the General Election under the Elephant symbol and UNP leader Ranil Wickremasighe will contest from the Colombo District, UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka told Daily Mirror online.

The Deputy Leader of the United National Party Karu Jayasuriya is to run for the general election from the  Gampaha District, he said.   Mr. Attanayaka added that talks regarding the elections were underway with other parties of the UNF such as the SLFP (M)- wing and Sri Lanka Muslim congress.

We are with you forever, 'Mr. Clean'!

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 07:00 PM

When there is a need to unite with other parties, the UNP can do it - anytime after the general election. But, for now, it's better that they go with the elephant symbol. Good luck, Mr. Ranil! As always, you will get the highest number of votes!

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 07:26 PM

Will he step-down from leadership, if he loses?

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 07:52 PM

This is not the time to think of safeguarding the party symbol. The most urgent need of the hour is to unite, under one common umbrella, to ensure that this 'axis of evil' is thrown-out of power!

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 07:58 PM

The election system we have in SL helps smaller parties to get more MP's into parliament. It's better to campaign separately ... but after the election, they must all get-together!

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 08:24 PM

    All Tamils are with you.

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 08:46 PM

MR. WICKRAMASINGHE, A HUMBLE REQUEST: WHEN YOU TALK, PLEASE DO NOT PAUSE WITH "A A A A A A A" - YOU LOSE YOUR CREDIBILITY!

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 09:03 PM

'FAILURES ARE THE PILLARS OF SUCCESS'! BUT DON`T JUST BE A 'SUCCESSFUL PILLAR.'

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 09:10 PM

It was a good final decision to go forward with the 'elephant.'

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 09:37 PM

Daily Mirror, you are doing a super job - at least in keeping our stress-levels down!

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 09:41 PM

Aah ... at last ... the GOOD OLD Elephant ... Oh Jumbo, we missed you ...

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 09:42 PM

I wonder if it's so much his 'incompetence,' as it is the short-sighted and fickle nature of voters, in this country. He's by no means perfect, but the real reason he has lost elections is because he doesn't have a penchant for rhetoric and spin ...

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 06:49 PM

We wish you 'good-luck' sir! In the meantime we have not forgotten SF - wish you all the best too!

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 09:52 PM

Mr. Ranil, congratulations! But, don't forget Sarath Fonseka!

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 10:09 PM

    Yes sir, good job, 'jayawewa'!

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 10:10 PM

Nadarajah sethu ... 'all Tamils are with you,' for what? How do you know that 'all Tamils are with him'?

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 10:14 PM

Mr. Ranil, you are on the right track!

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 10:16 PM

How come the UNP leadership did not listen to, or realize, the people's needs? Why can't the UNP join with SF and the JVP to get a 2/3 majority? UNP's 'going solo' means that the UPFA is going to get more votes. What a pathetic leadership. Sorry UNP, this time my vote remains with SF!

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 10:39 PM

Good idea, as more Tamils and Muslims are in Colombo rather than in Gampaha, or any other area.

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 10:50 PM

Jaffna would be a better alternative, according to the data of the Presidential election.

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 11:56 PM

No! What is needed, at this hour, is a united opposition!

    Friday, 19 February 2010 12:29 AM

Nevertheless, the General will gain hundreds of thousands of votes, belonging to the UNP, including mine. Sorry Ranil, but this will show the strengths of each other. The people should vote for the opposition, as much as possible - does not matter whether for the UNP or General. After the elcetion, they can all get-together.

    Friday, 19 February 2010 06:39 PM

The 'ELEPHANT' is the symbol that all must come under!

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 04:23 PM

He knows he cannot win elsewhere!

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 03:35 PM

    GOOD LUCK, Mr. Ranil.

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 03:35 PM

Does it mean that you like to engage with JVP & SF.
This tactic might work for you. UNP should be happy you are going it alone.

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 03:42 PM

Doesn't matter from which area, he is theOpposition leader forever.

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 03:52 PM

The peoples who are wise should vote for SF. Ranil is a born looser. It is time for him to quit politics and retire.

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 04:02 PM

Oh well, Ranil - after twenty odd unsuccessful attempts you might finally save face at least to some extent. Cos even if a ground hog was appointed by the UNP to the Colombo seat it would win regardless of whether it could or could not perform!!

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 04:04 PM

A true leader! doesn't hide behind the national list

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 04:09 PM

I guess it's safer in Colombo to celebrate silver jubilee in continous elect losses as opp leader. How about trying hambantota or matara for a change ?

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 04:12 PM

President told SR just before he resigns that after the defeat he will be thrown out by the opposition. SF should have the brain to understand that truth at least now.

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 04:15 PM

Yea....Good luck..you gonna need it tons of them...

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 04:17 PM

    Jaya Wewa!

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 03:34 PM

General will be forgotten in time to come. Its unfortunate even his wife two daughters, relatives could not see what a grade 5 student of Sri Lanka saw many months back.

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 04:27 PM

Very courageous Ranil. I never thought that you had the guts even to contest a General Election.

You had better do a computer jilmart when preferences are being counted.

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 04:30 PM

Our best wishes to you and your party. Obtain the highest ever preferential votes and establish a record.

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 04:32 PM

contesting separately will be the best way to win more votes. after all its the alliance in the parliament that matters

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 04:37 PM

Ranil please dont forget SF at any cost. This should be your priority to see that he gets released and justice is done.

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 04:40 PM

Good move.Much better than making an alliance with general again.Anyways even if UNP had made a one with the SF I dont think It would last for a long time.Good Luck UNP

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 04:44 PM

Super!! Opposition leader again !! Remember to oppose every good thing and bad thing govt does. That's your job.

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 04:50 PM

I WILL NOT VOTE FOR U. MY VOTE GOES TO SF. POOR SF FOR BEING TAKEN IN BY PPL SUCH AS YOU.

WHAT U ALL ARE DOING IS worse than what MR DID,

THIS IS THE MOST UNKINDEST CUT.

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 05:11 PM

targeting more votes may be..... is SF also comming from CMB from JVP++??

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 06:34 PM

What's the big deal ... under his leadership the UNP will continue to lose Colombo (district) ... he will only leave when the UNP is completely destroyed.

    Thursday, 18 February 2010 06:41 PM

    Wish you the very best!
