Opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe met President Mahinda Rajapaksa this morning to seek the release of General Sarath Fonseka, UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka told Daily Mirror online.

Mr. Attanayaka also said that the Opposition Leader requested the President to allow him to meet General Fonseka as no one except his wife had been granted permission to visit the detained General.

“Mr. Wickremasinghe explained to the President that General Fonseka’s arrest was illegal. He also requested to him to release the General as soon as possible. Mr. Wickramasingha further told the President that he wanted to meet General Fonseka as no one other than his wife was allowed to see him,” Mr. Attanayaka said.

Mr. Wickremasinghe told reporters on Wednesday that neither the constitution nor the army Act contained any legal provisions for the continued detention of the former Army Commander.

He further charged that Defence Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella, Media Center for National Security Director Lakshman Hulugalla and Military Spokesman Prasad Samasaingha had contradicted each other when giving reasons for the arrest and detention of General Fonseka.

Yes, Gentelmens, we all need to think of our country and its prosperity before all. work together hand in hand or else thousands of people will die on hunger soon.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 10:37 PM

I just love the way MR has dressed for this serious occasion, donning sports shoes...? What kind of attitude is that?

    Friday, 12 February 2010 07:05 AM

The last para of the news says it best."He further charged that Defence Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella, Media Center for National Security Director Lakshman Hulugalla and Military Spokesman Prasad Samasaingha had contradicted each other when giving reasons for the arrest and detention of General Fonseka." Well said,Mr.Ranil Wickremasinghe.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 07:06 AM

As a Sri Lankan I sincerely wish that MR will release him. Then we can rejoice for this moment that Democracy indeed does exists in this paradise isle

    Friday, 12 February 2010 07:07 AM

Ranil Wickramasinghe is the most genuine politician Sri Lanka has at the moment. See his intellectual and professional approach in political issues. All Sri Lankans must realize the value of this great gentleman, who is definitely free of corruption, and should support him bringing the professionalism to the Sri Lankan politics. Also general Fonseka is a straight and clean person through out his life, and therefore his alliance with Ranil is obviously a proper match. Sirs, don't be discouraged by any of the third class obstacles, the educated community is always behind you. The truth will win.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 07:10 AM

Well Done Mr. Wickremasinghe... Our General has been taken into custody, merely because he stood up for the people and opposed the regime...

    Friday, 12 February 2010 07:15 AM

Dont waste your time meeting, but proceed with the law and or it is a insult for General. People are behind General

    Friday, 12 February 2010 07:18 AM

Mahinda and Ranil are both winners at last presidential elections.JVP idiots and SF do n't know anything about politics. Its high time people like Mahinda,Ranil take center stage in politics and leave JVP and Generals in their due places.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 07:20 AM

Again ? Ranil what are you upto NOW ?
Better you both leave SF alone, let the LAW bring justice.............

Better be aware that Your turn is around the corner, in front JUSTICE

    Friday, 12 February 2010 07:23 AM

We Appreciate your your good work , press on it.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 07:25 AM

RW is a gentleman and Sri Lanka doesn't deserve him. MR, Gota and Basil well fit to keep the country in the doldrums.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 07:29 AM

The whole nation knows the truth as propounded by the Mahanayaka theras. Disgraceful behavior by the rulers, but we as Buddhists can only feel sorry for them as they shall reap what they sow.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 07:29 AM

    That's great

    Friday, 12 February 2010 07:35 AM

Be carefull, he will arrest you.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 07:42 AM

Mahinda must adhere to the wishes of Ranil Wickremansinge. Ranil Wickremasinghe is a stateman.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 07:43 AM

Ranil has got his facts correct. The detention of Sarath Fonseka isillegal. It is personl revenge. What kind of a example do these current rulers want to set for the younger generations.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 07:44 AM

Why UNP will feel lonely with SF as their vote base is drastically reduced and only SF factor will console it.
    Similar to JVP.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 07:47 AM

I am so proud to have leaders such as Mr.RW to remind so call rullers what is right and wrong.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 07:47 AM

Ranil, did you manage to get back home safetly?

    Friday, 12 February 2010 07:49 AM

Release should be unconditionally. But can he hear ? why couldn't he hear the voice of thousands upto now.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 07:50 AM

    Good move.....

    Friday, 12 February 2010 07:53 AM

Ranil watch your back while your there

    Friday, 12 February 2010 07:58 AM

Can Ranil guarantee that SF will behave like an officer and gentlement a nd also to guard his mouth
I do not think so.Leaving this man in normal socity is very dangerious to our country.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 07:58 AM

Good move by Ranil, Although he may seem funny to many with his outlook, he's got the right brains to steer this country in the right path.. if your'e looking at econimic development, he's the man, he knows his facts & has the knowledge, i wonder if MR has adequate knowledge about the economy, all he knows is to fool the people with his Bollywood Skills.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:01 AM

Everybody should think about the country before their own angry. SF & MR both r heros but now both r wrong. so other persons who looking to take the chance, they have greate opportunity to (Kala dutu kala wala ihaganna).

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:07 AM

None of this would have happened if we had a strong enough Leader of the Opposition in the first place. Ranil has hogged this pivotal place for too long, without being effective and without nurturing anyone else to take his place. Real dog in the manger. Fonseka stepped into and filled the void Ranil created for so long. Ranil is ultimately responsible for this regime.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:08 AM

Mr Fonseka has forgotten every thing.Fonseka is not a grateful person who bit the helping hand of the president. The president is the one who elevated Fonseka to the position CDS who was supposed to retire from the service(Army) in 2005 when Mr. Rajapaksa came to power.Mr Fonseka overestimated himself that he could win the last presidential election as he won the war against the LTTE terrorists. It is certain that Mr.Fonseka himself may have not won the war without the help of the political leadership.Mr. Fonseka thinks that honour gained by winning the war should go to him alone that's why behaves like a mad man after the presidential election.Mr. Fonseka must learn more of politics. He is still in the political kindergarten that he is still not matured enough to realize.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:08 AM

I always appreciate you a leader voice for good governance and democracy . But Sir, we are unlucky that our people couldn't realize your leadership qualities. pray for good things in general election which will serve this country.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 10:21 AM

    JEM D,

Yes RW will remina second best for ever thanks to idots like you in this world. RW is one man who will never come to power like your monkeys using our tax money.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:09 AM

As a responsible opposition leader and a true Sri Lankan citizen he has sought the most suitable way to resolve a conflict rather than encouraging violent street protests which will harm the national unity which is the only way for certain parties & people having vested interests. Whole ountry will respect you in this.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:09 AM

    Dear sir,
Please ,Try to release our truth Hero.
    You are the GREATE person.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 10:21 AM

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:10 AM

Are you crazy. What are you saying.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:10 AM

Funny! Ranil asking for war hero Sarath Fonseka to be released. Ranil should retire at least now. He has caused enough damage. LEAD, FOLLOW OR GET OUT OF THE WAY!

    Friday, 12 February 2010 10:27 AM

Ranil is the suitable leader for Sri Lanka

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:13 AM

I really don't understand these people commenting here.

9 months ago Ranil was the bad guy who everyone hate commented on right on the daily mirror website (Go and look at some articles dated march-may 2009). and now somehow he's the good guy? he hasn't done ANYTHING in the past 6 years except for persuading 1 of the greatest people ever lived in this country, General SF, to dig his own grave.

I have read alot of intelligent comments in these forums but now i'm having difficulty understanding the myopic view of these commenters

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:15 AM

Oh Tamilian, this is the bane of your problem. You do not differentiate a sincere and a cunning politician.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:16 AM

ha ha. RW must be happy man now

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:16 AM

Friend I guess you were born only yesterday. We have all seen Ranils infamous heroics and utterances over the past years. That is why he continues to remain second best all the time.

At least give some respect to the voters. They have all rejected him all the time. As for fonseka we don't have to go too far. How much do you know of Fonseka maybe like me since he became the commander. Even during this period from what we know about his arms deals. His wild talk, ill bred attitude, How can you call him straight and clean.

It is a shame for Ananda college for his speech reflects what he learnt at that premier Buddhist School

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:18 AM

Mr RW . I wish the Sri Lankan people will wake up and realize what's good for them at the next General election. Pls get the general released and join hands with his to save our country. This country is a safer place with people like you around

    Friday, 12 February 2010 10:35 AM

Totally agree. I challenge the government or the JVP, Sihala Karumaya , Muslim Congress to produce who is 50% powerfull as Hon Ranil Wickramasinghe is, in terms of Honesty, having a vision for the country and financial knowledge having a backbone.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:19 AM

Really a good move. Well done Ranil. But please ask SF to keep his mouth closed as much as possible. His open mouth is very dangerous.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:19 AM

RW who is your paymaster!! your are not clean as white for that SF too..

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:22 AM

    Statesman of which Country?

    Monday, 15 February 2010 04:44 AM

Dont you think Sarath Weerasekera should be arrested as he too has spoken to political parties while he was in uniform as he retired not even 3 days ago and hs already joined with the betel leaf. What if he joined the swan?

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:24 AM

I honor Gen Sarath Fonseka as war hero and I am proue to be a SriLankan as we have shown the world what this samll island could do . Also I Honour MR for his firm backbone against dirty international poltics.I am sure he would take the country towards the right path. No one is peferect . Ranil pupet of Internatinal agent - you dont know where are you going . you need your pride..and faimly pride .... we got a histroy of showing our countryman to other countries.. present situation is the out come of it... So lets take it easily.....it s a result of power hunder

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:32 AM

Ranil is a great leader - Sri Lanka could not get his services thanks to fools like you who always get easily carried away by petty patriotic slogans coming out of idiotic leaders.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:33 AM

    100% right FUNNY SRI LANAKAN

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:34 AM

He would have been the greatest statesman not for idiots like WW and followers like you

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:35 AM

Only talking no action ........ We want action very fast

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:39 AM

you guys only get fooled for all these propaganda and mud slinging against Ranil ....... Come on wake up

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:39 AM

Ranil would have begged MR to keep the SF in the custody until general election finishes.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:39 AM

Mr. Ranil Wickramsinghe must be in a hurry at this moment to get Mr Fonseka released from military police custody as Mr. Fonseka rendered a great service to Mr. Ranil by contesting the presidential election held on 26th January. Thereby Mr Ranil was able to escape narrowly from loosing his opposition leadership otherwise his(Mr. Ranil's) leadership in his party would have been questioned this time too by his party rebel group. So Mr. Ranil must be thankful to Mr. Fonseka for saving him from the chaotic situation which may have sprung up due to his weak leadership .

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:41 AM

your a bigger iddiot who dont know the policies of SF, so please sutup you mouth

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:41 AM

RW knows were to go and what to ask at coorct point. At the stage as a politician he may say few things, but this situ he has the correct thing ask the direct question from the person who ca ansewr. Hope Justice will prevail in our Mother Land.
