It’s quite unethical for the President to spend millions of rupees in public funds for himself and his large entourage in New York while citizens are starving and facing many hardships back at home, UNP MP Harin Fernando said

Addressing a press briefing today UNP MP Harin Fernando and Provincial Councilor Kithsiri Manchanayake stated that almost Rs. 150 million worth of public funds were being utilized by the Sri Lankan embassy to maintain the Government delegation visiting the United Nations. (YP)

You said it Danushka. Cheers ! You 've put into words what I had on my mind for many months now. Thanks a lot. Sanath.

It is so pathetic how Sri Lankans continue to commit mistakes. They believe in so called “promises” prior to elections without realistically thinking as to how one could deliver them. Then they suffer for 06 years (or at least till the next election). Again, when promises are made they forget the past (unfulfilled promises) and vote. When someone tells the reality or the truth, they are grossly rejected. The melancholy is that Sri Lankans never learn from history. The majority of the general public does not possess the necessary political maturity and wisdom that is seen in most of other nations (including Asia). So what can we expect? This will be a never ending cycle. Committing mistakes after mistakes and suffering of the masses forever. Even reluctantly I need to say that most Sri Lankans are very parochial.

This is NOT about Fonseka Canuck, better stay there in Canada

    Dr I.M.C.Fernando. Monday, 27 September 2010 02:29 PM

I cannot understand the idiotic comments above. The President must and has every right to attend UN sessions as Head of State. If this is the type of opposition that the UNP can provide the people will decide at forthcoming elections to wipe out the UNP.Mr RW to note.Puerile ideas of UNP member HF and his ilk should be condemned as completely out of order, coming from a much discredited and out of touch political party !!

Canuck - How much is a room in Trans Asia? How much is a room is Waldorfnewyork Hotel? DNA told the courts that they can present the list of names of the people who donated money for that. So can our president also show like that? Or is it our tax money?

Justice of Peace Monday, 27 September 2010 04:10 PM

Dr. Are you a medical doctor OR Ph.D ?

No one is against the President attending the UN.
But why 130 members attended, and at what cost to the tax payer?

    Che Monday, 27 September 2010 04:14 PM

who the hell cares, He is the Peoples President Chosen by the People, what he is doing is fully endorsed by the People, Now it is too late for any action, this is what the Majority wants. those who are concerned, why are you complacent?, sadly Sri Lanka is incapable of being United, and will never be United, THE CURSE OF KUVENI,for Treachery, The Orisans, from East India have done too much of Damage to such a Beautiful Island.

The President has evert right to take whoever he wants to BUT he should be mindful if any purpose will be served for spending on so many who have nothing to do there than to simply go for sight seeing at state expense.

Concerned Citizen Tuesday, 28 September 2010 01:34 AM

Hey Dr. Fernando, Doesn't the people of this country have the right of freedom of speech? When we see a wrong committed by a man who vowed to rule by Chintanaya policies, we have the right to tell him 'enough is enough'.

Above the crowd Monday, 27 September 2010 02:19 PM

You voted for him, He can do what ever he wants If I were the President I don't give two hoots for what the donkeys think

Smart Aleck Tuesday, 28 September 2010 01:40 AM

Doctor, I pity your patients. No one has objected to the President attending the UNGA. The comments are about the large number of others taken at public expense.

    Elaris Tuesday, 28 September 2010 01:43 AM

I cannot understand the logic behind the Incomprehensible Mad Comment ( I M C ) made by a Dr. called Fernando. There is no disagreement with regard to the President attending the UN General Sessions. The problem for the common man was about the scale of the gang which followed the President. Can the Govt. declare the total expenditure for the trip, number of deligates attended and their role. Did any of our deligates occupy a hotel by the name of "Wodroff Astoria" and if so what was the cost for a day` for using this hotel.

    Wasantha Monday, 27 September 2010 10:44 AM

MR has a habit of doing this since he was appointed as the President. It seems that he is not concern about the hardships of people , othewise he cannot forget Rs.2500/= salary increment, that he promised. As a politician there is nothing exceptional him, and very similar to his predecessor, other than giving the politcal leadership to win the war.

Hamzie IV Monday, 27 September 2010 10:46 AM

    Put this money in prospective.
We could have built 150 houses for the IDP's at a cost of 1 million each.

Currently government is giving Rs.5,000 and some takaran sheets for IDP's to build their own houses. This is so called re-settlements. What a pathetic situation.

    God save our mother Lanka.
