Royal College and Thurstan College Principals yesterday warned parents that the schools would not take responsibility for any conflict between student groups outside the school premises in future and requested them to take full responsibility for their children’s protection.

The Principals of the two schools met the parents of the students in grade 9,10,11,12 and 13 and discussed the reasons behind Tuesday’s clash where more than 400 students were involved with five students and a police officer being injured.

The students had pelted stones and the resultant riot like situation led to the closing down of both schools for two days. The Education Ministry said a few of the students were temporarily suspended.

Royal College Principal Upali Gunasekara told Daily Mirror the clash had broken out over a minor misunderstanding between two students of the two schools. He said he met the parents to ensure that such a clash did not take place again.

“We have informed the parents that they need to look after their own children. The teachers and prefects will take care of the students while they are in school. However we are not responsible for them when they are outside the school premises. It is up to the parents to protect their children,” Mr. Gunasekara said.

Thurstan College Officials the parents were concerned of any further conflict and wanted the issues resolved.

Meanwhile SSP Preshantha Jayakody said he inspected the two schools yesterday and found both schools functioning peacefully. (OJ)

It is strange that these things take place even after conferring "Broiler" Colonel positions on school Principals. Perhaps, these Colonels should now be dressed in their uniforms all the time in order to control unruly students.

Yeah right, Thurstan is so innocent. No need to elaborate on Thurtan's reputaion.

Imran Hussein Saturday, 27 October 2012 07:55 AM

No point they will be still the same, they are like the other namesake colonels.

Trehan Munasinghe Saturday, 27 October 2012 09:01 AM

Absolutely Zero tolerance... if you don't instill these good values in the younger generation... This will spread like a cancer... Boys will have the odd fight... that's normal, but organised groups and gangs attacking schools should not be tolerated in any civil society,
Its also sad that in Sri Lanka so many want to show that they are the Macho man, but end of the day very few are willing to even fight man to man... The real man is one who can avoid conflict as much as possible... that's not weakness its just great upbringing and morals...

Yes I agree with you. But, it was then and this is now. If the bus conductor did something against the children now, he will be beaten to death by the boys.

Pathetic citizen Sunday, 28 October 2012 12:00 AM

Nobody wants to take the responsibility. Just trying to pass the ball. Have to identify the students from both the schools. Inquire the cause and give a suitable punishment. Advice the parents too. If they continue, put them in a rehab. via DM Android App

Well if the GOV servants and uni students can do , what do you expect from school kids?
Who's suppose to set an example????!!!!!!!!

In the view of the situation we have to admit that these two schools have thugs and not children from civilised families.

When politicians justify hooliganism by their own children saying 'Boys will be boys' the rest of the society too will follow their example in hooliganism and say 'Boys will be boys.'

Now that the principals are Colonels and Majors, cant they maintain military like discipline.

    patriot Monday, 29 October 2012 12:00 AM

whether the principle request or not the parents will always take care of their children. but then what is the role of the school and it's educators arn't THEY RESPONSIBLE FOR CONDUCTING A BETTER DISCIPLE IN SCHOOL.
the problem is most of the kids parents of the leading schools are top guns of the government and the kids take the upper hand of the powers of their parents. via DM Android App

you mean .. students of royal college have come all the way to thurstan' main gate for the fight

    tony Friday, 26 October 2012 10:52 PM

    Principals with no principles.

    Curious Friday, 26 October 2012 11:19 PM

Education is future of a country but in Sri Lanka it is not so sure.

Well well well Saturday, 27 October 2012 12:00 AM

Not too long ago schools instlled discipline in students and students were expected to behave accordingly both inside and outside the school. Students were expelled or suspended due to much lesser offences. Royal college prefects are responsible as such a massive amount of students could not have walked to Thurstan without organizing and this could not have happened without the prefect's knowledge. The principlpals must act authoritatively and to safeguard the reputations of these esteemed establishments.

Ha! OPrincipals have Military honours. Can't they call the Military to control the boys??

    Student Saturday, 27 October 2012 02:29 AM

The fight had taken place right in-front of the Thurstan Colleges' main gate. If the principal is not responsible for the safety of the students in such scenarios, then he shudnt be the principal in the first place. No point of trying to prevent the fight near the schools, coz it will continue near tuition classes, most probably in Nugegoda. Best thing to do is to get the prefects of both schools to have a discussion and resolve the matter. Prefects can get the other students to stop fighting. If they dont take any actions now, it will be far worse, coz other schools also might join since Royal is involved.

I too attended one of the leading school in Colombo. During my time we all went to school is the CTB school bus. If we misbehaved in the school bus we were pulled up by the conductor and then report to the class teacher. The teachers too did the same if they saw up not doing the right thing at school or outside the school. I am in this position today because of my parents and teachers. They were not Colonels in the Army. The were the Colonels of our school. Thank you Sri/ Madam for molding us.

    meranchi Saturday, 27 October 2012 03:27 AM

should be parents irresponsibility they leave children an attend that is the main reason to those conflict.......i

    aja Saturday, 27 October 2012 03:19 AM

Good job no polticians involved school principal handles the issue thats the way to go agree parents should take charge of kids after school and decipline them. Let calm prevail these things happen it should be handled correctly.

    shanthapriyariya Saturday, 27 October 2012 04:02 AM

good job done by ssp prishantha jayakody.
as he himself is an old boy of thurstan college , it is better if he gets other senior officers also involved .

Thomas The Engine Friday, 26 October 2012 10:23 PM

That should have been the scenario all the way!.
Our society lacks respect to others, also these riots like situations truely reflect the attitude & behaviour of current society. Police should get to the root cause of the situ and deal with it, if not another brawl is just in sight. It should be zero tolerance policy.

Al Rasa Saturday, 27 October 2012 04:42 AM

No this is deviation of principles of principals should have.
You must educate the child for proper conduct even inside and outside the school. You can not confine your responsibility only in the premises of the school. Do not shun your responsibilities.

    shanthapriya Saturday, 27 October 2012 04:46 AM

things happened outside the school. but all the conspiracies and planning were done inside the school and during school time. it is said that some students of the hostel were hanging around about 9 pm in the night
principals of both schools too are responsible to some extent.
even the old boys of these schools want to take deciplinary actions agianst the culprits

Just Another Citizen Saturday, 27 October 2012 04:51 AM

The students should be expelled. Only way they will learn. Parents go through so much to get their children into these schools. They all need to be disciplined.

    Student Saturday, 27 October 2012 04:56 AM

I agree with u 100%... It was a well organized attack by the students of Royal... but sadly it is always Thurstan who gets the blame.. :(

    Student Saturday, 27 October 2012 05:10 AM

Yes... Hundreds of students hv come near Thurstan to attack the school.... Its nt much of a distance if Royalists used the gate from their primary section.. Just 5 minutes walk...

    mercy Saturday, 27 October 2012 05:20 AM

    May all be rightly guided

    mercy Saturday, 27 October 2012 05:16 AM

I suggest all schools to start on a daliy 4 rosters for five minutes on the main four religous saying since it would inspire and instill discipline in our children. The lack of religeous sermons is the is the root cause of students / children indiscipline all others would fall n its proper place on time automatically.

John Fernandez Saturday, 27 October 2012 05:27 AM

Tony, what can the principals do if the boys are fighting over a girl? Boys fight for all kinds of reasons. If they fight after school hours it's their problem and not the school principals. That's the case in other countries as well.
