President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday proposed that capital punishment should be given to those found guilty of drug trafficking in the country.

He said he hoped to send his proposal countrywide through the media in order to obtain public opinion in this regard and take a decision following its outcome.

Addressing an event to mark International No-tobacco day yesterday at the BMICH, the President said there would be opposition once this proposal is introduced.

World human rights organizations as well as groups within our country would say that death penalty would not be the answer, but many countries in the world carry out this punishment, he said. (Ariyaratne Ranabahu)

No... The death penalty is not the answer. A sentence such as life imprisonment without probability for parole could be suitable. It is not because I feel that mercy should be shown towards drug peddlers or rapists, but no matter how thorough a judicial system or investigative system is, it is handled by humans and mistakes can be made. Even in developed countries like the US, UK etc mistakes are made and an innocent person is sent to the gallows. After appeals and further investigations are done and the truth is found out, no amount of compensation can bring the person back. But life imprisonment can be stopped and a hefty compensation can provide some consolation for lost years if the person is found to be truly innocent. Therefore the president should strengthen the impartiality of the judiciary and investigative procedures and keep them free from manipulation and corruption and implement stern consequences such as life imprisonment for drugs and rape.

This is much welcome. It would no doubt save many an young son and daughter from becoming a drug addict. The same should apply to Rapists as well.In the alternative there must be a law to chop off the hands of these criminals. This would be a better reminder towards prevention.
